Motorcyclist Suffers Broken Leg

A motorcyclist was critically injured in the afternoon on Sunday, November 10, on a rural roadway just southwest of Brentwood in an unincorporated Contra Costa County region, according to firefighters. After losing control of his bike, it veered off the road and hit a sign. The unidentified male broke his leg in the process. East Contra Costa Fire Protection District said that the single accident was called in around 1:15 p.m. that afternoon. The accident took place near the intersections of Albers Court and Deer Valley Road, about halfway between Marsh Creek and Balfour Road. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene and after evaluating the injured male, determined that he needed to be airlifted to a hospital for immediate attention. The motorcyclist was flown to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. No update was immediately available.

Motorcycle Accidents on Rural Roads

Urban and rural land regions contain many fundamentally different characteristics regarding the density of road networks, travel patterns, and land use. Consequently, the characteristics of motor vehicle accidents differ between the two types of environments. When you think about riding a motorcycle in a rural area, it’s easy to imagine it as a safer and lower stress environment. However, what needs to be kept in mind is that there are potential hazards on rural roads in addition to a high number of rural motorcycle accidents every year. Regardless of your level of experience riding in the countryside, keep an eye out for these common rural hazards that frequently contribute to numerous motorcycle accidents:

  • Poor Road Maintenance – Rural road maintenance can be a hit or miss, depending on the town in question and their available tax revenue. Some rural roads should be scanned cautiously for potholes, bumps, and cracks. Additional problems include defaced, damaged, and missing road signs, as well as damaged guard rails.
  • Animal Crossings – Animal crossings tend to be almost fully specific to rural regions. Deer is one of the more common examples, as they are unpredictable and active during the nighttime. Riding at night makes you even more vulnerable to a fatal animal crossing accident, as the darkness makes them almost impossible to notice.
  • Poor Road Design – Some of the highways in rural areas are too narrow to safely adjust to their regulated speed limits. A driver may be faced with a blind or poorly banked curve in the road, while shoulders can be practically non-existent. Not all roads are equipped with essential road markings, like passing or no-passing lines. Roads that lack land markings expose you to the possibility of a head-on car accident with any oncoming traffic on a hill or curve. Additionally, a poorly designed intersection can catch you by surprise due to the extremely steep road grade or vision obstruction.
