Motorcyclist Killed in Thousand Oaks Accident
I’m Ed Smith, a Thousand Oaks personal injury lawyer. A collision in Thousand Oaks February 12 caused serious injuries to a motorcycle rider who later died from his injuries. The accident is being investigated by the traffic bureau arm of the county sheriff’s department in Thousand Oaks. They are asking that any witnesses to the crash contact the department with information.
I wish to extend my heartfelt sympathy to the man’s family and friends in their time of loss and sorrow.
What Happened
The accident occurred around 5:00 in the afternoon between the motorcycle and a motor vehicle at Marmon Avenue and Thousand Oaks Boulevard. It was reported that the motorcyclist, identified as male, was motoring along Thousand Oaks Boulevard in a westerly direction when he crashed into a northbound SUV that was trying to enter the parking area of a local shopping center. The motorcyclist’s identity has not been released until relatives have been notified by the medical examiner of Ventura County.
Motorcycle Fatalities in Thousand Oaks and Ventura County
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, 47 motorcyclists were either killed or injured in motor vehicle collisions in 2015 in Thousand Oaks. This represented a decrease from the 63 motorcycle riders who were injured or killed the previous year. Around Ventura County in 2015, 239 motorcyclists suffered injuries or deaths in accidents, decreased from 254 a year earlier.
Intersections Are Where Most Motorcycle Crashes Occur
Almost 50 percent of motorcycle fatalities happen at intersections, according to a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The available data suggests that three motorcyclists die daily in collisions of this type. The driver of the motor vehicle is at fault in many of the accidents when the driver makes a turn directly into the path of the motorcyclist.
How Motorcyclists Can Improve Their Safety at Intersections
- Don’t ride between vehicles because it’s more difficult for other motorists to spot you.
- Use visual aids such as bright colors, reflective clothing or LED lights to make yourself more visible.
- Don’t ride in the blind spot of a motor vehicle. Although they should at least be able to hear your cycle, they may have the radio turned up.
- Some intersections have the corners obscured by shrubbery, signage or other problems. Drive more slowly at this type of intersection to watch for dangers.
- Watch for vehicles backing out of driveways or pulling out from side streets.
- Let a motor vehicle lead the way at an intersection. If other drivers see them, they will probably see you.
Wrongful Death in a Motorcycle Accident
When a motorcyclist has lost his or her life in an accident due to another’s negligence, the surviving family may be able to seek compensation for the loss of their loved one through a wrongful death lawsuit. Under personal injury law, the statute of limitations is two years to file; however, a seasoned injury lawyer can assist by explaining your options and what your family may be able to recover. Although financial compensation does not take away the heartbreak of the loss of your loved one, it can help lessen the financial impact.
