Motorcycle Accident Injuries
Since motorcyclists lack the protection drivers have, the risk of serious injury is high when they are involved in a crash with a motor vehicle. Some of the most common are:
- Head injuries: Head injuries occur frequently in a motorcycle accident. These include traumatic brain injuries. A blow to the head can result in a fractured skull, subdural hematoma, intracerebral bleeding, and others. For many, a TBI results in permanent disability or death. In a motorcycle accident, this type of major injury can be avoided by wearing a helmet. It is critical to purchase only a DOT-approved helmet and take care to ensure it fits properly. It is not appropriate to purchase a used helmet, particularly if it was involved in an accident.
- Spinal cord injury: Since motorcyclists are not protected, major injury to the spinal cord occurs frequently. The results of a spinal cord injury vary from paresis or weakness of nerves that supply parts of the body innervated by them to partial or total paralysis. The level of injury corresponds to the area of the cord that was injured. For instance, if the cord was injured in the lumbar area of the spine, chances are strong the person may have paralysis of their lower extremities. However, if the spinal cord in the cervical or neck area is damaged, the individual may be unable to walk, talk or breathe without assistance.
- Upper extremities: The arms and hands can suffer a major injury due to a motorcycle accident. When the motorcyclist is thrown off their bike, they will undoubtedly stretch out their arms to break their fall. Unfortunately, many motorcyclists suffer arm and hand fractures.
- Lower extremities: Motorcycle injuries often involve the lower extremities. While many fractures and other injuries heal on their own, on some occasions, the fracture is complicated, and surgical intervention is needed. If a motorcyclist’s legs are trapped under the weight of their bike or under a passenger vehicle, it may be necessary to amputate the leg, especially if a crush injury was involved.
- Road rash: This injury occurs when the biker is thrown from their bike and slides across the pavement. In some instances, the injury is mild. However, at a higher speed, the contact with the pavement may peel off the protective skin layers and damage the muscles. This can introduce infective agents into the area, resulting in serious infections. In order to avoid this type of major injury, it is imperative for the motorcyclist to wear protective clothing as well as gloves and a face shield.
Investigating a Major Injury
At AutoAccident.com, our investigators are sent to determine liability at the crash site. The types and intensity of the client’s injuries are an important part of a lawsuit. This is approached in several ways:
- During the initial case review and in subsequent meetings, the pain and discomfort the client feels are characterized for use down the line.
- The client’s medical records relating to the incident are compiled and often reviewed to understand how they will limit their life or cause serious debilitation.
- In some cases, a medical expert will be asked to testify about the effects the major injury will have currently and in the future.
