Motorist Hits Stockton Fisherman
I’m Ed Smith, a Stockton pedestrian accident lawyer. An elderly fisherman was struck by a motorist on Tuesday, May 3, 2016.
What Happened?
A man who is said to be in his 70’s had just been fishing in the San Joaquin River when he was hit by a car Tuesday morning after attempting to cross Highway 4. The motorist indicated that the pedestrian was looking off to the east when he suddenly saw him and it was too late to stop. The motorist said he was travelling eastbound on Highway 4 at a reduced rate of speed because he knew the area is known for activity by pedestrians. After the tragic impact the pedestrian was thrown onto the hood of the motorist’s car which broke his windshield. He was driving a Ford sedan. Sadly, the pedestrian was thrown approximately 40 feet from the point of collision. Investigators said the victim possibly was carried to that point on the hood of the motorist’s car before he was able to bring the vehicle to a stop.
Where Did the Pedestrian Accident Happen?
The pedestrian accident happened along Highway 4 near the west end portion of a bridge that crosses over the San Joaquin River.
Will the Victim Survive?
Yes. He suffered major injuries and is listed in serious condition. Stockton Police have indicated the injured pedestrian is expected to survive.
What About the Driver?
The driver of the vehicle that hit the pedestrian is 42-years-old and resides in Stockton.
Authorities said that he stopped immediately after the collision to render assistance and cooperate with the traffic collision investigation.
Who Caused the Accident?
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. It usually takes between one to two weeks for the investigating agency to prepare a traffic collision report. It may take even longer when there are serious injuries involved.
