CHP and Office of Traffic Safety Urge Drivers to Slow Down
As holidays bring joy to the masses, they also raise concerns for the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and the California Highway Patrol (CHP). In preparation for Independence Day, these two organizations join forces to tackle the road crisis by promoting safe driving practices through education and enforcement.
CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee says reckless driving significantly threatens California’s roads. Duryee stated that speeding remains our state’s primary cause of road accidents, leading to numerous injuries and countless fatalities annually. He stressed that by reducing our speed, we can actively contribute to making our roads safer for all individuals.
Maximum Enforcement Period
To ensure safe journeys, the CHP will initiate a statewide maximum enforcement period from 6:01 p.m. on Friday, June 30, until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4. During this extended holiday weekend, all uniformed personnel of the Department will be actively patrolling to bolster public safety, discourage unsafe driving practices, and enforce the law as needed.
OTS Director Barbara Rooney emphasized the life-saving impact of maximum enforcement, which aims to hold drivers responsible for hazardous and illegal actions such as speeding and impaired driving. Before embarking on any short or long journey, Rooney said it is crucial to prioritize safety by devising a travel plan. The ultimate goal is for everyone to have a secure and joyous Fourth of July weekend with their loved ones.

During last year’s Independence Day weekend in California, 44 fatalities were reported due to crashes. Furthermore, the CHP conducted an intensive 78-hour holiday enforcement effort, resulting in nearly 1,000 arrests for driving under the influence.

In case you come across or suspect an impaired driver, promptly call 911. Be ready to provide the dispatcher with crucial details such as the vehicle description, license plate number, location, and direction of travel. Your timely phone call could potentially save a life.
