Multi-vehicle Crash in Sacramento Between 3 Vehicles
A huge traffic snarl occurred after a multi-vehicle crash in Sacramento on February 28. It was caused by a collision between three vehicles. The accident was reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) as occurring in the fast lane of Interstate 80 between Greenback Lane and Madison Avenue around 7:00 in the morning. Two lanes were closed down to traffic while the vehicles were cleared as well as the debris left by the collision. Although the lanes were reopened shortly before 7:30 a.m., traffic cameras showed congestion to the border of Citrus Heights and Roseville. No information was released on whether any injuries were suffered in the crash. The CHP is in charge of investigating the incident to determine how it occurred.
Dangers of a Multivehicle Crash
When multiple cars collide along a crowded roadway, each time a vehicle is hit it increases the risk of serious injuries and fatalities. While airbags should deploy when a vehicle is struck the first time, in further strikes against the car, they become useless. In addition to this danger, seat belts have been known to break in a high-impact crash. A broken or defective seat belt provides no protection if the vehicle is struck repeatedly.
Collision Injuries Caused by Multiple Vehicles
Multivehicle crashes cause thousands of injuries every year and account for about 15 percent of all traffic deaths. Some of the more serious injuries include:
- Traumatic brain injuries: If a driver or passenger strikes the windshield or metal part of a vehicle, it can cause a TBI. More serious types of TBIs can result in hematomas, edema, skull fracture or a diffuse axonal injury, which is often fatal.
- Spinal cord damage: Being tossed around in a vehicle upon impact can increase the risk of spinal cord damage. This can cause partial or complete paralysis, depending on the location of the break in the spine.
- Abdominal trauma: The seat belt itself can cause internal damage in the abdominal area from internal bleeding to organ trauma.
- Amputation: Losing a leg, arm, hand or foot in a multiple vehicle crash can permanently impact an individual’s life in the future.
- Chest trauma: The shoulder restraint or a defective belt can be the cause of chest trauma. This can include fractured ribs or heart and lung damage.
Seeking Help Following a Crash With Multiple Vehicles
Determining accurate liability in a multi-vehicle crash is important when it comes to collecting fair compensation. This is how an experienced injury lawyer can help. By using crash reconstruction, expert witnesses and other technologies, the lawyer works hard to prove that you are entitled to financial damages for your injuries. In addition, other factors may have been part of the cause such as a drunk or distracted driver. This is important in a comparative fault state such as California.
