Multi-Vehicle Crash in Napa Leads to Injuries

On the afternoon of Monday, October 25, 2021, a multi-vehicle crash occurred on Highway 12/Jameson Canyon in the vicinity of Kirkland Ranch Road in south Napa. There was a total of five vehicles involved, and there were multiple injuries reported, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Facts of the Highway 12 Incident

At around 3:32 p.m on Monday, reports of a crash on Jameson Canyon came in, according to the related CHP incident log. The driver of a Ford SUV had been turning from southbound Kirkland Ranch onto east Jameson Canyon when a recreational vehicle (RV) that had also been traveling eastbound broadsided the Ford.

Results from the accident investigation suggest that the driver of the RV failed to yield at the crossing of Jameson Ranch and Kirkland Ranch. It is unclear whether mechanical issues with the stoplights played a role. The extreme weather on Sunday resulted in power outages in the area, and traffic lights were affected, although it seems as though they would have been fixed by the time this incident occurred on Monday.

Injuries Suffered by the Involved Parties

The person who had been driving the Ford SUV suffered major injuries and required transport by helicopter to Providence Queen of the Valley Medical Center (the Queen). There were a total of four other vehicles involved in the collision, and two other parties were taken by ambulance to the Queen.

Highway Shutdown for Scene Investigation

The multi-vehicle crash prompted a partial closure of eastbound Jameson Canyon Road. The affected portion of the road remained closed for more than two hours for evidence gathering, investigation, and scene clean-up. Intermittent closures of the westbound lanes of Jameson Canyon Road also took place. A full reopening of the roads was announced at approximately 5:30 p.m.

What to Do When Traffic Lights Fail

There is no confirmation that the failure of traffic lights or a power outage contributed to Monday’s accident on Highway 12 in Napa. However, because we consider Sunday’s big storm to be the unofficial start of the Northern California winter driving season, it is a good idea to know what to do if malfunctioning signal lights are encountered during road travel.

If you encounter an intersection that has lost power and the traffic signal lights are not working, the intersection should be treated as a four-way stop.  Always stop behind the intersection line, look in all directions, and use extreme caution when proceeding. Other motorists, pedestrians, or bicyclists may not realize that the lights are malfunctioning, so always err on the side of caution in such a situation.
