Nine Separate Chain-Reaction Crashes Involve 33 Vehicles

Nine separate chain-reaction crashes involving 33 cars and trucks occurred in Sacramento on March 7 along U.S. 50 just before 5:00 in the afternoon. The collisions all occurred along the westbound lanes of the highway between the northbound Howe Avenue entrance ramp and 65th Street and resulted in multiple injuries.  According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident left debris strewn across all the lanes. First responders arrived at the scene, and after evaluating the individuals involved in the crash, transported five people to a nearby hospital, one with an injury described as moderate and the rest with minor trauma. Tow trucks were called to remove some of the vehicles with serious front or rear-end damage. The lanes were clear about two hours later. Police officers at the scene believe that rain contributed to the chain-reaction accidents as well as motorists who were following too close or driving too fast.

Negligence in Chain-Reaction Crashes

Driving in inclement weather is a common contributor to chain-reaction crashes. Slippery roads and poorer vision are often factors that affect a vehicle’s traction on the roadway, making it harder to stop in an emergency. However, driver negligence is usually a contributing factor. Drivers who are tailgating, speeding or driving while distracted or fatigued often cause chain-reaction crashes. When injuries occur as a result, the injured person can place a claim for compensation. This covers the cost of their medical bills, time that they may have lost at work, and compensates them for their pain and suffering. Enlisting the help of a seasoned injury lawyer helps them obtain the compensation they need to cover their economic and noneconomic losses.

Proving Damages in a Personal Injury Claim

There are four elements in a personal injury case. In order to collect damages in a claim following chain-reaction crashes, it must be shown:

  • The motorist that struck your vehicle had the responsibility of driving in a safe manner that would not cause harm to another person.
  • The motorist failed in that duty.
  • An individual was injured in an accident because the other motorist was negligent.
  • Because of their injury, the person suffered a financial loss.

How a Personal Injury Lawyer Helps

In order to obtain fair compensation for an accident injury, fault must be shown. This is what an experienced injury lawyer is trained to do. Our investigators head to the accident scene to gather evidence against the at-fault party and to support your claim. The investigators look over the police report to see if any errors were made and talk to the witnesses. They look for mounted cameras at traffic lights and businesses that might have videotaped the collision. In addition, they look for driver error that may have caused the crash, from distracted driving to speeding or inebriation. Accident reconstruction is performed and shows how the vehicles were positioned before and after the crash, as well as how it occurred. When the evidence is all gathered, our lawyers take over to construct a strong case in our client’s favor. Whether negotiating for our client with an insurer or building a case for court, it helps ensure that the injured person will obtain the compensation that they deserve.
