Emergency Responders Called to Multiple-Vehicle Collision Site

A multiple-vehicle collision in Sacramento on February 6 resulted in injuries to at least one individual. The accident occurred along 65th Street south just north of 53rd Avenue at about 10:00 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). It involved two SUVs and a Nissan or Toyota truck. It was reported that one man was discovered lying in the center divider and holding his chest, so emergency responders with the Sacramento Fire Department were called to the scene. It was also reported that the damage to the vehicles was significant enough that all three would probably need to be towed from the site. An investigation into the multiple-vehicle collision is being conducted by the CHP to determine how the accident happened.

Multiple-Vehicle Accidents

A multiple-vehicle collision involves two or more vehicles and can occur on a highway or an urban thoroughfare. Such accidents can happen in a variety of ways, such as:

  • Red-light runners: A driver may run a red light at an intersection and crash into several other vehicles. Since intersections are often busy, any number of vehicles can be involved.
  • Cutting in front of other vehicles: Often, a driver will cut into an adjacent lane without properly judging the available distance between their vehicle and another. This may cause the driver in the lane to stop short, setting their vehicle up for a rear-end collision. This, too, can cause a chain reaction accident.
  • Vehicle pushed into an adjacent lane: On occasion, a vehicle will be pushed into an adjacent lane due to a collision. Cars already in the lane may crash into the intruding vehicle, causing other drivers to become involved.
  • Rear-end crashes: This can happen for a variety of reasons but generally boils down to a driver to the rear not paying attention or traveling too fast and hitting the vehicle ahead. Many times, this pushes the lead vehicle into the one in front of them, causing a chain reaction.
  • Inclement weather: On slippery roads, the conditions are ripe for a rear-end accident. If the vehicle ahead slows down for any reason, a driver to the rear may not stop in time to avoid striking the lead vehicle. Drivers are obligated to travel at a safe speed for the weather and to leave enough distance between them and others to stop in time.

Measuring Liability in a Multiple-Vehicle Collision

Determining liability in a multiple vehicle collision can be complex. Generally, it is the driver to the rear that is at fault. However, there are other people and entities that may be involved. For example, when a driver in an adjacent lane cuts into oncoming traffic, the driver to the rear may not be held liable. Each case is different, and your personal injury lawyer will use the resources at their command to sort it out.

Considerations in a Multiple-Vehicle Collision

When determining liability in a multiple-vehicle accident, one of the most important involves rear-end collisions. There are several other things to consider when trying to determine liability, such as:

  • Was one of the vehicles speeding?
  • Did one vehicle cut in front of another from an adjacent lane?
  • Were there bad road conditions at the time of the accident?
  • Were citations issued to any of the drivers?

What an Attorney Can Do for You

At our firm, we send our investigators to the scene of the crash to search for the evidence necessary to determine liability. They do this by using accident reconstruction techniques that show the position of the vehicle before and after the crash. Witnesses also provide a great deal of information as do video accounts of the multiple-vehicle collision. Our investigators also carefully review police reports for mistakes. Once all evidence has been compiled, it is released to our lawyers who use it to build a strong case for our client.
