Napa Head-On Accident

On Tuesday, August 8, 2017, a head-on crash near Napa prompted authorities to call for a medical helicopter to attend to an individual who received traumatic injuries

Accident Information

California Highway Patrol (CHP) released a public report indicating that the collision occurred at about 4:32 p.m. on Highway 12, just east of the intersection of Highway 121. CHP noted that the accident had been a head-on collision involving an orange-colored vehicle and a silver sedan.

The specific reason for the head-on crash is, as of yet, unreported by CHP officials, and no witnesses made public comments.

Response and Injury

CHP reported that when emergency responders arrived at the site of the crash, they found that one individual was trapped inside one of the vehicles. Responders immediately began to extricate the individual from their vehicle and called for a medevac helicopter to provide emergency medical assistance.

When paramedics arrived, they treated the individual on-site before transporting them to the nearest hospital for further care.

Additional Information

According to authorities, all lanes of Highway 12 were blocked at the collision site while the individual was being rescued. Additionally, the case is under active investigation by CHP.

Head-On Collision

Head-on collisions are one of the most dangerous types of auto accidents and have the potential to leave drivers and passengers with serious injuries, including brain damage, cervical sprain, lung and chest trauma, heart contusions, and more.

Sometimes, those involved in a head-on crash will have time to brace for the impact. This can reduce the body’s trauma and mitigate the damage the impact causes. However, these accidents usually happen in a flash, leaving vehicle occupants with little or no time to prepare.

Head-On Accident Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), head-on vehicle accidents occur much more frequently in rural areas. Their data indicates frontal accidents are responsible for 13 percent of fatal crashes in rural areas, whereas they only account for 7 percent of fatal crashes in urban areas.

Additionally, front-end impacts in which one or more vehicles are traveling at speeds of 40 miles per hour or above almost always result in fatal or catastrophic injuries.

Frontal Crashes in Napa

According to data from UC Berkeley researchers, head-on accidents have been the sixth most common type of injury collision in Napa City over the last four years, accounting for 6.37 percent of all injury accidents. This is the same percentage as Napa County, where front-end accidents accounted for 6.43 percent of all injury-involving collisions.
