Napa Man Injured in Collision
On Saturday, September 16, 2017, a Napa man sustained serious trauma after his vehicle collided with a tree in Lake County.
Accident Details
According to a report released by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Stephen Mann Jeffries, a 61-year-old man from Napa City, had been driving in the westbound lane of Butts Canyon Road a short distance west of the Oat Hill Road intersection at around 12:50 p.m. when he lost control of his vehicle, a 2007 Nissan Pathfinder.
After losing control of the Nissan, Jeffries crossed into the eastbound traffic lane and eventually drove off of the roadway where he traveled for a short distance before striking a tree head-on. No other vehicles or people were reported to have been involved in this collision.
Injuries
After CHP received a call notifying them that a man may have been injured on a country road in Lake County, they sent emergency response personnel to the site of the collision. Authorities noted that responders found Jeffries in his vehicle with major traumatic injuries. Jeffries was transported via REACH helicopter ambulance to the nearby Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for immediate emergency medical care.

Investigation
Officers of CHP are actively investigating this incident in order to learn more about the circumstances surrounding the accident. CHP has not made any statements as to whether or not the driver is suspected of driving under the influence of intoxicants.
While authorities have stated that the reason Jeffries lost control of his vehicle is currently unclear, possible factors contributing to the accident include a medical emergency, a defect in Jeffries’ vehicle, the negligence of another motorist, a roadway defect, and more.
Head-On Collisions
Head on collisions are one of the most serious types of accidents that people in passenger vehicles can be involved in. Because all of the vehicle’s momentum is in the direction of the impact, head-on accidents come with a much higher force of impact than other types of accidents.
Although passengers of vehicles sometimes have an opportunity to brace their bodies to prepare for impact, it is more common for head-on accidents to occur very quickly, leaving passengers with very little time to prepare for the shock their bodies are about to receive.
Common Frontal Collision Injuries
Some types of injuries that are related to head-on impacts include head and brain injuries, injuries to the spinal cord, trauma to the lungs and chest, fractured ribs, cervical disk injuries, facial fractures, and facial lacerations.
Always remember: the most important thing to do after being involved in an accident is to seek medical help for your injuries. Even if you think that you might not have serious trauma, some injuries can go unnoticed and cause serious complications if untreated.
