New California Transportation Company Law

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Uber and Lyft Accident Attorney. Governor Jerry Brown has signed a bill into law requiring transportation companies like Uber and Lyft to conduct extensive criminal background checks for those who plan to drive for them.

Frightened Napa Mom Asks to Be Let Out of Uber Car

Mary Beth McCann requested an Uber ride from the Sacramento International Airport to her home in Napa. The driver began talking about his past criminal history. This made McCann uneasy. She asked the driver to drop her off at a Target store in Sacramento. She placed a call to her husband and he came and picked her up. McCann takes great comfort knowing the problem she experienced will now be remedied.

About Assembly Bill Signed into Law

Assembly Bill 1289 is the law for the State of California to require all transportation network companies to conduct comprehensive background checks for their drivers. The new law restricts individuals who have been convicted of  driving under the influence, are registered sex offenders, have committed violent crimes, have been charged with domestic violence or assault from driving for ride share companies. Companies that do not comply with the state law will be issued a $5,000 fine for hiring drivers with the stated criminal offenses.
