Improved Car Safety Features Are Increasing
Injuries due to car accidents vary from minor to life-threatening. This depends on many factors such as the vehicle you are driving and its safety features. With improvements in technology, safety features are increasing.
Safety Features in Cars Help Prevent Injuries
Drivers are familiar with many of the safety features in motor vehicles that can help reduce injuries in accidents. From seat belts, airbags and head restraints to tire pressure monitors and electronic stability control, these features have proven to be useful. The newest models have even more advanced safety features that can help a driver avoid a collision.
Technology That Warns of Blind Spots
Blind spots are always a danger to drivers on the road, and many vehicles have blind spots. According to Consumer Reports, using a system to warn a driver by providing an audible, tactile, or visual alert can help drivers when changing lanes or merging, helping to avoid a side collision. However, a few models give out false alerts. This feature is available in some models with the emergency braking system options.
Automatic Systems for Emergency Braking
Rear-end crashes commonly occur when drivers either don’t apply sufficient pressure on their vehicle’s brakes or don’t apply them at all. There are two technological advances in braking systems available. One is called the Dynamic Brake Support system. When a driver applies the brakes to avoid an accident, sensors in the vehicle work to supplement that brake pressure, and stop the vehicle before it strikes the vehicle in front. The other type of emergency braking system is Crash Imminent Braking, which kicks in if the driver needs to brake and doesn’t. This system either automatically slows or stops the vehicle to avoid an accident. Both of these systems are available on some vehicles. Since rear-end crashes are frequently the cause of neck injuries, this might be an option worth considering.
Cruise Control With Added Features
Drivers love cruise control on long trips. However, the newest versions also help prevent accidents. By using cameras, radar, lasers, or even a combination, these features keep your vehicle moving while maintaining a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. Some available systems will stop the vehicle when necessary if there is an accident or traffic jam. When the traffic starts up again, it will return to its former speed automatically.
Injuries Commonly Seen From Car Accidents
When you decide to trade in your car for a newer model, looking for features that help protect you in an accident are important. Some common injuries that occur in accidents are:
- Head injuries: In some collisions, traumatic brain injuries can result from crashing into the dash, windows, or steering wheel. Some head injuries are not apparent right away and may arise with time, causing cognitive problems, bleeding in the brain, and other serious consequences.
- Spinal cord injuries: Injuries such as these can cause severe nerve damage that may lead to partial or total paralysis. Even less severe injuries such as a herniated disc can cause long-term health problems resulting in disability.
- Neck injuries: Neck injuries may range from mild to severe. While these injuries may improve with time and rest, they can cause lost time from work while recuperating.
- Bone fractures: Broken bones are common in car accidents and frequently require casting and surgery to repair. Since bone fractures, depending on the location, can take weeks to months to resolve, broken bones cannot only make a physical impact on the injured person but a financial impact as well.
- Facial injuries: Facial injuries may be minor, causing bruising and scrapes, or may be severe. Severe injuries such as broken bones of the face or damage to the eyes, nose, or teeth may require a long period of recuperation and plastic surgery to make repairs. The individual may also be left with unsightly scarring.
