New Motorcycle Safety Devices at 2018 CES
I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento motorcycle accident lawyer. Motorcycle riders around Sacramento may be interested in one of the new offerings presented at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas recently. Although not available in the United States yet, it is already available in Europe and will hopefully be hitting the store shelves soon.
Safety While on a Motorcycle
Safety is of primary concern when a rider is out on a motorcycle. Because of the lack of personal protection in a motor vehicle collision, motorcyclists commonly face serious injuries when in a crash. Finding ways to improve safety by becoming more visible is a good addition to a rider’s normal safety procedures.
Injuries and Fatalities to Motorcyclists
In 2015, 200 motorcyclists in Sacramento were either injured or died as a result of a collision with a motor vehicle. The numbers do not represent those who were in single-vehicle crashes. The California Office of Traffic Safety reported that the number of those injured or killed was 64 higher than the previous year. With an improved economy, more people take to the road for travel, work or enjoyment. This increases the risk of an accident.
Cosmo Moto Helmet Light
This motorcycle helmet light, which can also be used to help prevent bicycle accidents, skateboard accidents and others, mounts on the back of a motorcycle helmet with a magnet. The lighting unit has a Bluetooth connection and is rechargeable with a USB port. Displaying flashing red lights, it has automatic nighttime illumination. When the rider slows down, the lights become brighter. An app that is accessed via a phone mounted on the bike’s handlebars signals when the rider is making a turn. If the motorcyclist is involved in an accident, the device calls the rider. When there is no response, it automatically phones the individual listed as an emergency contact. If that person does not answer, after the device calls the number twice, it notifies 911, providing whatever medical information is on file and the appropriate GPS coordinates.

Airbags for Clothing
Airbag vests and jackets have become available, and some even double as reflectors to make the rider more visible. According to Smart Turn System, they operate in the same way airbags in a motor vehicle work. If the rider is in an accident or gets thrown off the bike, the airbags inflate in less than one second to help protect the rider. The bags are flooded with an inert gas, which helps to cushion the body.
