North Natomas Rollover

North Natomas Rollover

North Natomas Rollover. An accident occurred on October 25, 2018, in North Natomas near the Sacramento International Airport between two vehicles, which resulted in one overturned car and at least one reported injury. The Sacramento Fire Department personnel were on the scene, and an ambulance was requested. Tow trucks were required to remove the vehicles, one of which was blocking the slow lane along northbound Interstate 5.

North Natomas Rollover Details

The collision occurred a few minutes before 1:00 p.m. along I-5 North at the Airport Boulevard off-ramp, when for unknown reasons, a Toyota Corolla struck a second Toyota Corolla. One vehicle rolled over into the center divide, according to a California Highway Patrol (CHP) report of the incident. The other vehicle ended up on the right-hand side of the road. Two occupants of one of the cars were able to get out of their car.  There is no word as of the time of this report on the nature and severity of the injuries. The lanes were reopened about 15 minutes after the tow trucks arrived. However, no further details were provided concerning the cause of the accident or whether drugs or alcohol was involved.

Types of Rollovers

There are basically two types of rollovers: tripped and untripped. A tripped rollover happens when a vehicle encounters soft dirt or a curb. An untripped rollover is due to inherent vehicle factors such as speed, steering, and tire traction. One of the most frequent causes of a tripped rollover occurs when a vehicle is moving in a sideways direction, usually after a crash, and hits an obstacle like the curb or travels over soft dirt. Speeding is directly linked to a rollover, particularly when the vehicle is navigating a curve. About 40 percent of all fatal rollovers had speed as a factor in the crash. In approximately 75 percent of cases, the speed limit was at or over 55 mph.

Additional Factors in a Rollover

There are other reasons a rollover happens. Some are:

  • The crash occurs in a non-urban or rural area where the likelihood of a barrier is less.
  • Roughly 50 percent of all rollovers that involve a fatality is the result of drunk driving.
  • Approximately 85 percent of all rollover deaths occur in a single vehicle accident.
  • It is estimated that 90 percent of rollovers happen when the driver is in a familiar driving pattern. This suggests that distracted driving may be involved.

What Is a North Natomas Rollover?

A rollover is a type of accident where a vehicle is turned on its side or roof. All vehicles can roll over. However, some have a greater propensity to do so. Taller, narrower cars or light trucks and vehicles driven at high speed are most likely to be involved in a roller. This is directly influenced by the vehicle’s center of mass and height. Some vehicles are more likely to roll over than others. For example, the Tesla S has been said to have a low chance of rollover since it has a low center of mass. Alternately, light trucks and SUVs have a higher incidence of rollover due to higher ground clearance and can end up with a crushed roof, causing serious brain injuries. Vans, particularly extended passenger capacity ones, are especially prone to rollover since the heavier suspension increases clearance from the ground.
