Northern California Garbage Truck Collision

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Garbage truck accident lawyer. Accidents involving garbage trucks have the potential to be very serious. Because of their large size and high center of gravity, garbage trucks can cause massive damage when they collide with other vehicles. One such accident occurred in Northern California last month.

Accident Details

California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident happened at about 5:30 p.m. on August 10, 2017. Officers indicated that the collision involved at least one other vehicle and initially occurred on the southbound lane of highway Interstate 280 a short distance north of Alemany Boulevard in San Francisco.

After the initial collision, the Recology garbage truck came to a stop at on the median divider with its cab jutting out into the left shoulder of the southbound section of the highway and its rear end in the fast lane of the northbound side.

Injuries

CHP’s reports indicate that emergency medical personnel found at least one individual at the site of the accident with traumatic injuries. The individual was reportedly sent by medical ambulance to the nearest hospital to receive emergency care. The specific nature of the individual’s injury was not reported.

Cleanup

According to officials, the collision caused a fuel spill across the freeway. Workers from the San Francisco Fire Department responded to the hazardous spill and cleaned the highway. This reportedly caused severe traffic, shutting the highway down completely until 2:00 p.m. and partially until 9:10 p.m.

Garbage Truck Accidents

Sanitation workers are essential parts of our communities. Garbage trucks haul waste away on a regular basis and, usually, they do so efficiently and safely. However, as with any large truck, garbage trucks can cause serious injuries to pedestrians, road workers, and other motorists when involved in collisions.

Garbage truck accidents can happen because of driver negligence, falling objects, defective equipment, or poor maintenance. Accidents often result in serious injuries such as major burns, crush injuries, brain injuries, and even death. The US Department of Labor keeps track of garbage truck accidents in the U.S.

Garbage Trucks and Liability

Depending on the circumstances, multiple parties may be at fault in the case of a garbage truck accident. Hiring an attorney with experience handling garbage truck accidents is the best way to ensure that you know who is liable for specific damages and to help you pursue just compensation effectively.

An experienced injury lawyer will not only know the most effective ways of determining liability, such as checking the inspection records of a garbage truck, but can prevent vital evidence from being obscured by at-fault parties.
