How to Obtain a Motor Vehicle Police Report in Ventura
I’m Ed Smith, a Ventura car accident lawyer. When involved in a car accident, the driver gathers important information with regard to the crash if police are not called to investigate. When police are required, such as when damage is $1,000 or more and there are injuries or deaths associated with the crash, the police file a report that contains the accident details. Knowing how to request a copy of the police report is helpful when filing a claim either with the insurance company or using the services of an attorney to recover damages.
Who Can Request a Copy of an Accident Report?
To request a copy of an accident report from the California Highway Patrol, the requester has to be a person with a personal interest in the crash. This may include the driver of one of the vehicles, a passenger in one of the vehicles, a property owner if the accident involved their property or the legal guardian or parent of a minor who was present in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
What Information Is Required to File a Request?
The information a requester has to fill out is fairly basic and found on form CHP 190. It includes name, address, insurance information and date or approximate date of the accident and location. If the location is unknown, the interested party must supply as many details on the location as possible to help narrow it down to a certain area. Supply the name of the owner of the vehicle/vehicles or driver/drivers at the time of the crash. The requester must also provide a copy of their identification card or driver’s license to verify identity and pay the fee.
How to Obtain an Accident Police Report in Ventura
The Ventura Police Department can take up to two weeks for an accident to be entered into their system. However, those involved in an accident where police come to investigate normally receive a copy of the police report while still at the accident scene.
Accident Injuries
Accidents caused by another driver’s negligence can not only cause shocking injuries, they can result in high medical bills and lack of money coming into the home from lost wages, as well as other expenses such as prescription costs. In more serious injuries, even after the person gets home, he or she may require in-home nursing or other help until they recover. Calling an experienced car accident attorney is the first step in recovering those damages.
