Searching for the Fleeing Driver in a Hit-and-Run
Unfortunately, drivers who commit a hit-and-run are more common these days. In some cases, they have been drinking, are speeding or committing another traffic infraction or simply want to avoid responsibility. However, if the fleeing driver can be located, they can be held financially responsible for the injury they caused.
Locating Fleeing Drivers
Over the years, our investigators have successfully located a number of hit-and-run drivers. We do this by using our experience and resources. Some of the areas where our investigation is conducted may include the following:
- Going to the scene of the Olivehurst hit-and-run is the first thing our investigators do. While there, they photograph and search for debris left behind by the vehicle. If metal and plastic pieces and paint marks can be recovered, the make and model of the vehicle might be determined.
- The accident report issued by the police is examined to ensure its accuracy and see what evidence they recovered.
- Surveillance cameras in the area are checked to see if the accident was caught on tape. If it was, the tape can be recovered to use as proof.
- Accident reconstruction shows how the vehicle was positioned in relation to the bicyclist and how the Olivehurst hit-and-run occurred.
This gathered information is used to construct a strong case for the injured rider to recover compensation if the fleeing driver is located. However, it isn’t possible to find a hit-and-run driver in some cases, but there is another option for the injured rider to recover compensation.
An Injured Bicyclist May Use Their Uninsured/Underinsured Auto Policy
When drivers elect to take auto insurance, they are offered an add-on policy that covers uninsured and underinsured drivers. Many drivers opt for this add-on insurance because of the number of other motorists who are not covered or carry a minimal policy. This can be used whether you are injured in a motor vehicle, on a motorcycle or bicycle or as a pedestrian. If you don’t happen to have an uninsured/underinsured policy but a close family member does, that can be used instead. The rates of their policy in the future remain the same.
