Eureka Area Hit-and-Run Collision Injures One
On Friday, January 24, 2020, a Eureka area hit-and-run collision left one person with serious injuries. California Highway Patrol (CHP) traffic reports indicated that the accident happened at around 10:15 p.m. on Lucas Street in the small community of Myrtletown just outside of Eureka. Police stated that a blue sedan hit a pedestrian and immediately drove away from the crash scene. Details about the survivor’s injuries have not been reported. Additionally, no other parties were involved in the accident.
Investigation
As of the most recent reports, CHP is still looking for the missing vehicle and driver. Anybody who witnessed the accident or has information that could help police locate the missing party can help officers with their investigation by calling (800) TELL-CHP.
Pedestrian Injuries
Pedestrians aren’t protected by seatbelts, airbags, or walls of steel like vehicle passengers and drivers are. Because of this, they are liable to suffer a number of major injuries, even in relatively low-speed accidents. Common pedestrian injuries include:
- Bone fractures
- Spinal cord trauma
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Chest trauma
- Lacerations
All of these injuries have varying levels of severity and can range from minor to life-changing or even fatal.
Recovering from a Crash Injury
The process of recovery for crash survivors can be hard. Often, car accident injuries are very painful and take a long time to heal. Furthermore, people with serious injuries frequently need to undergo one or more surgeries in addition to completing physical therapy in order to fully recover. If the accident leaves you with chronic symptoms, you may need to make changes to your household to improve accessibility. Altogether, these things can be stressful as well as very expensive.
Hit-and-Runs and Liability
With a normal vehicle accident, injured parties can hold reckless drivers responsible for the damages they’ve caused by filing an injury claim. However, with a hit-and-run, the liable party may never be found. This can lead survivors and their families worried about how they will be able to afford their medical bills and recover for their losses.
In many cases, officers are able to find the responsible driver. However, if the driver cannot be found, survivors may be able to claim compensation through their own insurance company. By making use of “uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage,” it’s possible for hit-and-run survivors to claim many of the same payments available through injury claims. However, this coverage is optional in California, and not all policies will pay out the same amount. Furthermore, insurance companies may offer you less compensation than you actually deserve for your losses. For this reason, it’s important to seek advice from a Eureka personal injury attorney who has experience handling serious hit-and-run cases.
Do I Really Need a Lawyer?
