Road Rage Led to One Person Being Shot
A two-vehicle crash took place near Ceres during the midnight hour of Saturday, July 22, 2017. When one of the drivers in the accident attempted to confront the other driver, the exchange of words resulted in a devastating road rage accident.
What Happened?
An 18-year-old Modesto man was driving his 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer traveling eastbound along Don Pedro Road at approximately 12:54 am. The man had just left his uncle’s home and was on his way home when he approached the intersection of Don Pedro Road and Collins Road and was struck by a silver sedan. The motorist of the sedan, identified as a 20-year-old woman of Modesto, was allegedly speeding from the corner of Moffet Road and collided with the young man’s Mitsibushi. When the young man got out of his vehicle to speak with the female driver, things took a sour turn.
Accident Sparks Road Rage
Three males exited out of the silver sedan and were allegedly ready to fight the young man. The young man returned to his vehicle to search for something to defend himself with. At that moment, a 20-year-old Modesto man from the silver sedan allegedly brandished a black semi-automatic handgun and shot one round in the air after talking with the young man. The 20-year-old man then allegedly struck the 18-year-old man in the face with the handgun, which caused the young man to suffer a broken nose injury. The impact caused the gun to fire a round, which unfortunately struck one of the passengers in the chest from the silver sedan. The gunshot wound caused the man to fall to the ground, marking the pavement with his blood. The group in the silver sedan allegedly took off from the scene to transport their injured passenger to the Memorial Medical Center.
Authorities Detain Involved Parties
Authorities were contacted a short time later by the emergency room staff of the Memorial Medical Center reporting that a man had arrived with a gunshot wound to the chest. When officers arrived, they detained every party involved in the incident. The weapon that was used in the ordeal was identified as a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun that has not yet been located. The man that brandished the firearm was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Jail for unlawful discharge of a firearm and assault with a deadly weapon.
Preventing Road Rage Accidents
Road rage is typically defined as the uncontrollable anger of a motorist that is usually provoked by an irritating act of another driver and is expressed in violent or aggressive behavior. The common signs of road rage include:
- Cutting off another motorist
- Honking the horn multiple times
- Signaling inappropriate hand gestures
- Speeding past an intersection to avoid a red light
- Weaving in and out of traffic aggressively
If you notice another motorist exhibiting road rage behavior, is it best to always stay calm and contact authorities as soon as possible. A situation involving one road rage driver may escalate if multiple motorists become angry at one another. Anger can lead a motorist to conduct impulsive actions that may result in a collision with two or more vehicles. The impact can be severe enough to cause a victim of a road rage accident to suffer traumatic, catastrophic, or even fatal injuries.
