Oroville Wrong Way Crash Causes Fatalities
I’m Ed Smith, an Oroville Personal Injury Attorney. While every auto accident is a serious issue, those that occur at high-speed are particularly dangerous due to their potential to cause polytrauma and, possibly, death. These risks were on full display following a recent head-on collision along Highway 70 early in the morning.
Going the Wrong Way
What started as a typical early morning day quickly turned dark when a head-on collision erupted on Highway 70. The car accident started to develop when a driver heading north in a Nissan suddenly crossed over the highway into the lanes going south. What followed next could only be described as a scene of horror as multiple car accidents developed. The Nissan pickup struck an SUV traveling south in the side yet remained undeterred as it then crushed a Chevrolet, which was then struck by a Ford SUV that was traveling immediately behind the Chevrolet. These accidents can lead to a number of traumatic injuries such as bone fractures and abdominal trauma.

While people hearing about these types of severe accidents likely assume that drunk driving was somehow involved, it was not an issue in this accident, according to the police. Despite the lack of alcohol, every passenger in the Chevrolet was killed. The driver of the Nissan heading in the wrong direction was severely shaken and was transported by air to a nearby Chico hospital for further evaluation. When the driver of a car accident comes to a sudden stop, their momentum can carry them forward into the steering wheel, possibly causing traumatic brain injuries or chest trauma with multiple rib fractures. Following the accident, the highway was closed for investigation.
Car Accidents can Result in Chronic Conditions
Even if people survive such a severe accident, it is possible that they might develop chronic pain from a spinal cord injury, one of the most common comorbidities that can develop from a car accident. Often, this pain develops as a result of whiplash when the heads of passengers are suddenly thrown back and forth while the car undergoes a sudden change in momentum, stretching the cervical ligaments that attach to the spine. While this pain may fade over time, for many people the injuries can be permanent. Without a doubt, injuries caused by car accidents can have permanent negative impacts on people’s quality of life.
