Coloma Road Site of Intersection Accident
For the second time in less than a year, an out-of-control vehicle crashed into a house on Coloma Road in Rancho Cordova. The recent crash occurred on the corner of the Coloma Road and Georgetown Drive intersection. A vehicle flipped over and landed in the front yard. Fortunately, this time, no one was injured by the out-of-control vehicle.
Current Owner Ready to Leave
The present owner of the house, Briana Perrin, said she is ready to move after being there for only 30 days. The reason for this is that if the car had traveled 15 or 20 feet more on the same trajectory, it would have been in the bedroom her children shared. A harsh reminder of what could have happened consisting of skid marks on the lawn and a broken street sign is evident on the property. Perrin no longer allows the children to sleep in their bedroom, opting to keep them with her at night.
Dangerous Intersection
The traffic on Coloma Road is not only heavy, but the vehicles often travel at a high speed. Perrin attests to the high speeds, saying that she sees vehicles traveling 80 mph or more on a daily basis. The combination makes the risk of an accident high.
Overall, intersections are the site of 40 percent of all accidents. Of these, 40 percent of serious accidents and 20 percent of fatal ones occur in intersections. A large number of fatal intersection accidents happen due to a red-light runner.
Prior Out-of-Control Vehicle Accident
In January, another out-of-control vehicle crashed into the same house, killing an elderly woman and injuring her son and daughter-in-law. Both the son and his wife say the recent accident has dredged up the horrific incident they lived through. The family is suing the city of Rancho Cordova due to the dangerous issues surrounding the intersection.
Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputy Killed
In 2008, a Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy was killed in the same area. Larry Canfield was patrolling on a motorcycle when he tried to stop a speeding car.
Residents Want the Area to Be Safer
Residents who live in the area voice their fears about walking around the corner lot Perrin calls home. They say the vehicles often race around the corner and present a significant danger to them and their families. The residents said the city has responded by placing hedges and boulders but nothing that would make them feel safe.
City’s Response
The City of Rancho Cordova said that they could not discuss the intersection since it is currently involved in litigation. They did say they are working with the homeowner but offered no specifics.
Speed Complicit in Rollover Accidents
Speed is a significant factor in rollover accidents. That is because it affects the vehicle’s stability and the driver’s ability to keep it under control. Other factors include the height of the car and its shifting center of gravity.
A rollover can have a dire effect on the occupants of the vehicle due to roof crush. This involves the strength of the infrastructure supporting the roof. In some cases, the manufacturer fails to comply with federal standards that require the roof to support three times the weight of the vehicle. When that happens, the manufacturer can be sued for product liability. It is important to preserve the car after a crash to explore the reasons behind roof crush.
Investigating an Out-of-Control Vehicle Accident
It is crucial to gather evidence of fault at an accident site. In an out-of-control accident, tread marks are an essential clue. The presence of tread marks typically indicates that the driver tried to stop, while their absence shows the operator did not. The latter is often linked to drunk driving.
Our firm also uses accident reconstruction to determine liability. We interview witnesses and obtain video footage of the accident. Police reports are reviewed for inaccuracies. Once this is finished, our lawyers use the data to build a strong case for our client.
