Pedestrian Accident Fatally Injures Gustine Man Near Merced County

I’m Ed Smith, a Merced personal injury lawyer. A pedestrian accident occurred near downtown Gustine on the evening of Friday, September 15, 2017. The collision, unfortunately, claimed the life of an elderly Gustine man.

Our deepest thoughts and condolences are with the loved ones of the man that passed away in this devastating pedestrian accident.

What Happened?

A 78-year-old man was walking in the vicinity of Third Avenue and Fourth Street at approximately 8:00 pm. At the same time, a 40-year-old Gustine resident was driving their 2007 Chevrolet northbound along Fourth Street. The Chevrolet allegedly struck the elderly pedestrian that was attempting to cross the street in an unknown direction.

Was the Pedestrian Injured?

The elderly man involved in the pedestrian accident suffered serious injuries and was transported to the Memorial Hospital in Los Banos. The man was, sadly pronounced deceased during treatment.

What Caused the Pedestrian Accident?

The pedestrian accident remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Traffic Collision Reports usually take one to two weeks to be processed. The motorist of the Chevrolet remained at the scene and cooperated with officials. Authorities did not conclude that drunk driving played a role in the collision.  It is important to note that traffic reports may be inconclusive pertaining to fault, leaving the injured person or the family of the deceased victim with many unanswered questions. If a member in your family has suffered traumatic injuries or has passed away in a pedestrian accident, it is critical to contact an experienced Merced personal injury lawyer. An experienced attorney can investigate the scene of the accident and examine the sequence of events leading up to the collision to determine liability.

Preventing Pedestrian Accidents

The best way for motorists to avoid pedestrian accidents is by exercising defensive driving habits. Drivers should be aware of their surroundings and keep a watchful eye out for pedestrians. It is so important to come to a complete stop before a crosswalk to avoid hitting a pedestrian.
