Teen Injured in Pedestrian Accident
A pedestrian accident in Atwater left a teenager injured on November 5, 2018. The accident occurred at the intersection of Bellevue Road and Seventh Street. A 17-year-old girl was riding her skateboard northbound through the intersection with two friends. While skateboarding in the crosswalk, the girl was struck by an oncoming pickup truck. The impact of the collision caused the teen to suffer moderate pelvic injuries and lacerations to her hands and arms. Medical personnel transported the girl to the Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera for treatment. Officials have not yet released an update regarding her condition.
Children and Pedestrian Accidents
Children are at an increased risk of being involved in a pedestrian accident for a wide array of reasons. This may be due in part to a lack of knowledge among younger children regarding the dangers they may face while crossing the street. Since children are smaller in size than adults, they may be more difficult to spot on the road by drivers. Conversely, a child’s size is also attributable to the types of pedestrian injuries they may sustain in an accident.
Pediatric Injuries and Pedestrian Accidents
When a child is involved in a pedestrian accident, there is a chance that he or she could sustain one or more pedestrian injuries as a result. Following are some of the common injuries suffered by adolescents in such accidents:
- Bone Fractures: Anytime a pedestrian is struck by a motor vehicle, there is always the chance of a bone fracture. When a car hits a walker and causes them to fall to the ground, there is usually a natural instinct to brace oneself for the impact. While this tends to protect pedestrians from internal organ trauma, adolescents may suffer a radius or ulna fracture.
- Head and Brain Injuries: Trauma to the head may result when someone is going out for a stroll around town. While head injuries are serious in nature, they are even more so when the victim is a child. Since a child’s brain is still maturing, any type of neurological damage can mean severe growth complications.
- Spinal Cord Injuries: The spinal cord is considered one of the most critical components of the body. When nerves of the spinal cord are damaged, the results often prove permanent. According to the American Spinal Injury Association, approximately one-fifth of all spinal cord injuries occur in adolescents.
