Pedestrian Accidents in Eureka
I’m Ed Smith, a Eureka car accident lawyer. Auto accidents are dangerous and commonly cause injuries that change people’s lives. Crashes involving pedestrians are especially dangerous. This is partly because pedestrians lack the protection that cars give vehicle occupants. Even low-speed accidents can leave pedestrians with trauma such as leg fractures, traumatic brain injuries, hip bone issues, and more. The city of Eureka has been the site of numerous severe and fatal pedestrian accidents in recent years. However, these incidents do show certain trends. Those who often walk near city roadways can reduce their chances of being involved in a crash by knowing how, where, and when these collisions normally happen.
Accidents Overview
Data published by research groups at UC Berkeley shows that, between 2006 and 2017, Eureka saw 349 traumatic car accidents involving pedestrians. Out of these 349 crashes, only eight vehicle occupants received injuries, while 372 pedestrians were hurt. Additionally, Eureka was the site of the majority of pedestrian/vehicle crashes across all of Humboldt County, which saw 665 of these collisions in total.
Dangerous Intersections
These locations in Eureka had a higher number of pedestrian crashes within 100 feet than other city intersections:
- 14th Street at Broadway Street
- California Street at Harris Street
- Broadway Street at Henderson Street
- Harris Street at Spring Street
- F Street at Harris Street
- Elizabeth Street at Harris Street
- H Street at Harris Street
- Myrtle Avenue at West Avenue
Collision Time
The highest concentration of pedestrian versus vehicle accidents in Eureka occurred between noon and 9:00 p.m. on weekdays. Weekends had dramatically lower crash rates with more occurring on Saturdays than Sundays. The two most common time-periods for these accidents were Mondays between noon and 3:00 p.m. and Wednesdays between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Also, very few of the collisions took place between midnight and 6:00 a.m.
Accident Severity
Crashes involving pedestrians in Eureka usually involve serious injuries, with only around 41 percent including only non-severe visible injury. Twenty of the collisions were fatal, while 52 caused severe injuries and 131 resulted in non-severe visible trauma.
Notably, accidents involving pedestrians caused more fatal injuries than all of Eureka’s non-pedestrian accidents, which only caused 17 fatalities. Further data shows that when local crashes involve a pedestrian, they are over six times more likely to be deadly.
Causal Factors
Officers responding to these accidents most often reported violations of a pedestrian’s right-of-way as the primary causal factor. Right-of-way violations caused 151 (43.27 percent) of the crashes in question. The second-most common causal factor was violations made by pedestrians, which caused 123 accidents (35.24 percent).
