Help Locating a Fleeting Driver
Over the years, my law office has located many drivers who have fled the scene of an accident and caused death. We believe this is one of our priorities since someone who has lost a loved one is grieving enough without receiving justice for their family member’s demise. Our investigators are experienced in finding the evidence needed to bring a hit-and-run driver to justice. Some of the areas in which they conduct an investigation include:
- Checking nearby roadway and surveillance cameras for footage of the accident
- Reviewing the report by the police for mistakes
- Interviewing eyewitnesses to the pedestrian death accident for information they may provide
- Conducting accident reconstruction, which shows the positioning of the vehicle/vehicles and how the accident resulting in a pedestrian death occurred
- Checking the driving record of the person who caused the accident to look for previous infractions
If the Driver Cannot Be Located
There are instances when a hit-and-run driver can’t be found, but that doesn’t mean the family is out of options. If someone in the family carries the uninsured/underinsured umbrella policy as an add-on to their auto insurance, that can be used. It isn’t just for drivers or passengers in autos who become injured. It also covers pedestrians, motorcyclists, bicyclists, and others. It will not affect the policy holder’s rates by making them go up.
Addressing Grief After a Family Death
It can be hard for other family members and friends to show their empathy and care for those who have lost a loved one in a tragic accident. However, there are many ways in which to do so, which can include:
- Phone or visit in person to express your sympathy. Many people send a sympathy card, flowers, or make a contribution to the decedent’s favorite charity.
- Send over food you have prepared or from a restaurant. When someone is deep in grief, they can forget to eat or have no appetite. Having prepared food on hand can encourage them to eat and keep up their strength.
- Offer to chauffeur the grieving person to run errands such as for groceries or prescriptions. They may not feel up to driving.
- Accompany the grieving person to make the arrangements at the funeral home if other family members aren’t present. This is not a time for someone to do that alone.
- Remember that grief doesn’t end with the funeral service. Continue to call and visit and help out wherever you can.
