Pedestrian Fatality Discovered Along Florin Road
A pedestrian fatality occurred in the Florin area of Sacramento on September 14 following a hit and run accident. The death was reported to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) around 7:44 p.m. when a female pedestrian was discovered lying in the roadway along Florin Road, just west of 55th Street. The police log reports that there was no description of the vehicle involved in the pedestrian fatality, which apparently left the scene of the accident. The Sacramento Coroner’s Office arrived at the crash site to declare the person dead, however, the name of the deceased has not been released pending notification of the next of kin. This is not the first time that a hit and run accident involving the death of a pedestrian has occurred in this area. In February, a 44-year-old male pedestrian was struck at Florin Road and 55th Street by a hit and run driver, which resulted in his death.
Facing a Sudden Death in a Pedestrian Fatality
A family faces overwhelming grief when a loved one dies unexpectedly. In a moment, a loved one is gone without time for goodbyes. This produces a wide assortment of emotions ranging from anger to detachment. There are several things that family members can do to help them through this difficult time:
- Acknowledge the loved one is gone: It is very difficult for some family members to face that the person they love is gone. This is especially true when the loved one died suddenly. The family member may continue to live in the past as if the deceased will come walking through the door at any moment. While understandable when grieving, this approach may be detrimental to the person’s well-being. It is healthier to face the situation head on. If this continues, it might be helpful to obtain professional help.
- Talk to others about what happened: Whether it is members of the family or a trained counselor, it is helpful to discuss what happened. By doing this, the family member can bring their feelings to light and direct themselves in a healing direction.
- Take care of each other: It is common after a sudden, wrongful death to stop eating properly and go for long periods with little sleep. It is important to remain strong in this harrowing time.
Who Is at Fault After a Hit and Run Accident?
Until the hit and run driver is apprehended, a consistent question clients ask is who will be responsible for the damages the family faces. In California, your insurance company is required to offer uninsured/underinsured motorist protection. Not everyone takes advantage of this offer. If they do, however, they are able to use their own uninsured motorist protection to pay for any damages the family incurred. In addition, if another family member living in the home has uninsured motorist protection, that person’s coverage can be substituted. When a pedestrian who does not have car insurance is killed by a hit and run driver, a family member who lives with them and carries uninsured motorist protection can file a wrongful death claim against their insurance company.
What an Attorney Can Do for You
In an accident with a hit and run driver, there are a lot of questions that must be answered. Our law firm has developed a protocol that allows us to do just that. We dispatch investigators to the scene of the accident to search for all evidence that will help us determine how a pedestrian fatality might have occurred. This includes using information to identify a hit and run driver. We also interview witnesses to the crash and obtain video footage from nearby businesses and traffic cams at intersections. Once this aspect of our work is completed, we release the data to our legal team who use it to structure a strong case.
