Pedestrian Fatality Involving Tractor Trailer
A pedestrian fatality occurred in the vicinity of 5th & Market and resulted in the death of a man on July 18 at 9:52 a.m. The driver of a tractor-trailer who caused the crash did not stop at the site of the accident. By 9:51 a.m., the trucker was located at Broadway near Front Street. He is identified as Oscar Matus, a 65-year-old resident of Lathrop. Matus was arrested by the San Francisco Police and charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian and vehicular manslaughter. Police are questioning witnesses and checking surveillance video in the area. Matus is an employee of Terraba Trucking of Stockton and is cooperating with the police. The coroner identified the pedestrian killed in the fatal accident as Michael Evans, a 54-year-old Stockton resident. Evans was pronounced dead at a local medical facility. I would like to offer my condolences to the family and friends of Michael Evans.
San Francisco Pedestrian Fatal Accidents
San Francisco has been plagued by a dozen pedestrian deaths over the last 12 months. The area where the latest pedestrian fatal accident occurred is referred to as the Tenderloin and is also earmarked as part of the “injury network.” It is called that because many pedestrian and bicycle accidents happen there. San Francisco is trying to address this problem by re-engineering the streets. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s acting director said that the city is working to make it safer by cutting the speed limits in the area. He remarked that Taylor Street was redesigned last month for this purpose.
How an Injury Lawyer Can Help
Hit-and-run accidents increase the trauma of an injured party and their family. Not only are they physically injured, but they also have to rely on others to find the fleeing driver. In some cases, such as the one described above, the hit-and-run driver is located quickly by police. In others, our team of investigators can help. We use our proven techniques to assist in finding the perpetrator and determining liability for the pedestrian’s death. Once negligence is firmly established, our legal team works to file a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of the family. This assists the family in overcoming the financial difficulties they are experiencing. While this does not relieve the family’s sense of loss and grief, it makes it easier for them to move forward. Call us for free, compassionate, and friendly advice.
Pedestrian Accidents
The number of pedestrian deaths in this country is rising alarmingly. It is the highest it’s been in 28 years. Roughly 6,270 pedestrians died in 2018. This represents an increase of 4 percent over 2017.
Causes of Pedestrian Fatal Accidents
Sport utility vehicles and trucks have been increasingly involved in pedestrian fatalities by a rate of almost 50 percent since 2013. Passenger sedans also saw a rise in involvement in pedestrian fatalities by 30 percent. Other errors are responsible for the uptick in pedestrian deaths, such as distracted driving, speeding, and falling asleep at the wheel. Alcohol is a persistent reason for pedestrian deaths. It has been shown that the walkers or the motorists were impaired in half of all pedestrian fatal accidents. Finally, an increase in the number of pedestrians accounts for more deaths.
When Do Most Pedestrian Fatal Accidents Occur?
The majority of pedestrian deaths occur after dark. Studies show that the number of pedestrian deaths occurring at night has increased by 45 percent. This stands in contrast to the increase in daytime pedestrian deaths, which is 11 percent.
Pedestrian Wrongful Deaths
When a loved one dies due to another’s negligence, the family suffers emotional and financial loss. By filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the negligent party, the family can recover the cost of funeral and burial expenses. They can also recover the deceased’s monetary support and the loss of companionship and consortium. Talking to a wrongful death attorney can make the process easier.
