Brentwood Accident Injures Elderly Pedestrian
Last week, an elderly woman who was crossing the street via crosswalk was hit by a car in Brentwood. The accident took place by the Deer Ridge neighborhood in the early evening shortly after 5:30 p.m. According to the Brentwood Police Department, the collision happened at the intersection of St. Andrews Drive and Foothills Road. The injured pedestrian, an 80-year old woman whose name has not been disclosed, was using the crosswalk when she was struck by a 42-year old Brentwood resident. The driver was making a left turn when they collided with the pedestrian.
The car crash left the 80-year old woman with moderate injuries. She was transported via helicopter to a hospital where she was evaluated for her injuries. The Balfour Road entrance towards Deer Ridge was shut down for numerous hours to let authorities investigate the crash. The driver of the vehicle reportedly stayed at the scene and was fully cooperative with authorities. Alcohol or drugs were not a factor of the collision, according to police.
Risky Driver Behaviors Contributing to Pedestrian Accidents
On many occasions, pedestrians and motorists both display unsafe traveling behaviors that have contributed to pedestrian accidents across the nation. However, motorists are much more likely to walk away from this type of collision injury-free. Since motorists are likely to cause more damage to a pedestrian, this gives motorists a higher responsibility to ensure the safety of those around them every time they get behind the wheel. Let’s review two big motorist contributors to the rates of pedestrian injuries and fatalities:
- Improper headlights: Many pedestrian deaths happen in the evening hours. One of the most crucial safety guidelines of driving is to make sure that you have clear visibility of the road in front of you while driving. However, there are tons of car models (including newer releases) that contain headlights providing inadequate light against the night sky.
- Speeding: Driving above the speed limit can quickly turn reckless. Research released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety states that the average risk for serious injury in a pedestrian hit by a car is 25 percent at 23 mph, 50 percent at 31 mph, and 75 percent at 39 mph.
Getting Legal Assistance as an Injured Pedestrian
Establishing fault can make (or break) your claim. This is why it is imperative to get in touch with a trusted injury attorney with a credible reputation. An experienced injury attorney will make use of all available resources; in the case of pedestrian injury or death, there are many variables to consider. Some of the following include surveillance videos/cameras, the scene of the crash, police reports, and eyewitness testimonies. After fault has been determined, the attorney can work to build and strengthen their case against the defendant. This entire process is intended to assist the injured party to obtain their rightful compensation.
