Accident on Power Inn Road Injures Pedestrian
A pedestrian injury occurred in Sacramento on August 26 after the walker was struck by a motor vehicle. The accident happened in the Florin area at Power Inn and Gerber roads around 9:30 in the evening, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The driver involved in the crash advised authorities that the male pedestrian walked in front of his vehicle.
Pedestrian Transported to Hospital With a Major Injury
The pedestrian suffered a major injury as a result of the accident and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and additional evaluation. No additional information was provided by the police. The incident is being investigated to determine what happened.
Causes of a Pedestrian Injury Accident
Pedestrian accidents result in some of the worst traffic injuries, and it is known that the faster the vehicle is traveling that strikes them, the higher the risk of the walker becoming a fatality. Common areas where injuries to a pedestrian occur include:
- The lower extremities are where injuries commonly occur to a pedestrian in an intersection collision. About half of all pedestrians suffer this type of trauma because this is where the vehicle strikes them. Injuries can include a broken pelvis or other bones and trauma such as lacerations to the muscles and ligaments.
- Head and neck trauma occur when the pedestrian crashes into the hood or windshield of the vehicle or is tossed on the ground by the impact. Around 38 percent of all pedestrians in an accident with a motor vehicle suffer injuries to the face, head or neck. Traumatic brain injuries, concussions, fractured skulls or jaws as well as trauma to the upper vertebrae happen.
- About 27 percent of pedestrian injury accidents involve trauma to the upper extremities such as the hands, wrists and arms. Because the walker often puts their arms out to try and lessen the impact of landing on a car or the ground, bone fractures are common.
Conducting an Investigation Into a Pedestrian Injury Accident
Motorists are often, but not always, at fault for a pedestrian injury accident. Some of the reasons a passenger vehicle driver can cause a collision with a pedestrian are because they are used to watching out for other motorists, not for people on foot or riding a bicycle. Some of the common negligent actions that can lead to a pedestrian injury accident include:
- Distracted driving
- Running a red light or stop sign
- Speeding
- Not yielding the right of way
- Drunk driving
