Pedestrian Killed After Highway 99 Crash in Modesto
A pedestrian was killed after a crash on Highway 99 in northwest Modesto on the morning of February 29, 2020. The pedestrian accident occurred around 4:40 a.m. along the slow lane of Highway 99 southbound near Kansas Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a man in his 50s was walking on the highway when a Toyota approached him. The driver of the Toyota, a 57-year-old Modesto man, was unable to take evasive action, and the right side of his car struck the pedestrian. The Toyota driver stopped and cooperated with investigators, the CHP said. Sadly, the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His identity has been withheld by officials until they have notified his family.
Loss of a Loved One
The loss of a loved one is devastating, especially when another person is to blame for the sudden death. Survivors often experience shock and anger in addition to grief when they lose a loved one as a result of someone else’s negligence. Such unexpected losses may leave surviving family members feeling hopeless and overwhelmed, but a Modesto wrongful death attorney can help. An attorney knows that obtaining fair compensation for a loved one’s wrongful death can help relieve financial hardship as well as uncertainty about a family’s future.
Coping with Grief After a Fatal Highway 99 Pedestrian Crash
Any wrongful death can cause emotional and financial hardship, as well as uncertainty about the future, for surviving family members. The grieving process after a loved one’s wrongful death varies in duration and intensity from person to person, but relatives can find ways to help them get through it. This includes:
- Understand that Grief Takes Time to Heal: Families often have good or bad days when it comes to recovering from the loss of a loved one. If you find yourself having a bad day, it is critical to not be hard on yourself and recognize how much work you have done throughout the healing process. Keep in mind that grief requires time to heal, and there is no way to speed up the process.
- Create a Support System: It is essential to establish a support system with people you can trust to help you throughout the grieving process. A support system reminds surviving family members that they are not alone during this challenging time and that others have experienced similar losses, allowing them to freely discuss their burden.
- Establish New Daily Routines: Setting up a new daily routine can help surviving family members get through their loss by minimizing triggers such as frustration or panic. If the decedent used to prepare dinner, accept a meal offer from family and friends to fill in until a solution has been found. Try to maintain a consistent schedule as best as you can.
- Seek Answers for Closure: A death after a pedestrian accident often involves negligent acts on the part of a driver or entity. Survivors are entitled to answers to all of their questions regarding their loved one’s death so they can find closure and move forward after their loss. If the decedent was the primary provider of the family, surviving family members should seek the advice only an experienced Modesto wrongful death lawyer can provide. An attorney with years of experience can investigate the sequence of events leading up to the fatal incident to determine liability and obtain fair compensation on a family’s behalf.
