Pedestrian Killed in Crash on I-880
The California Highway Patrol reported that a pedestrian was killed in a crash on I-880 in Oakland on August 13, 2023. The incident was said to have occurred shortly after 11:10 p.m. along southbound Interstate 880 just north of 29th Avenue.

CHP traffic officers indicated that an individual on foot was allegedly struck by a vehicle on southbound Interstate 880 in Oakland. The pedestrian was reportedly attempting to cross I-880 from the south shoulder when they were hit by a vehicle in the No. 2 Lane.
Officials at the scene performed life-saving measures on the pedestrian before they were transported to the hospital. Authorities were notified shortly after that the man had succumbed to their injuries. The pedestrian has been identified as 34-year-old Elester Payne III.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. The involved motorist was cooperative and remained at the scene with officials. Further information on the crash on I-880 that killed a pedestrian has not yet been released.
