Pedestrian Killed in Rancho Cordova by Speeding Vehicle

I’m Ed Smith, a Rancho Cordova pedestrian accident lawyer. In the early morning hours on Monday, September 18, a pedestrian was killed while crossing the intersection of Folsom Boulevard and Paseo Drive when one of the two vehicles involved in an accident there hit and killed the man.

I would like to take this opportunity to offer my condolences to the man’s family and friends in this time of sorrow.

Details of the Accident

According to a representative of the county sheriff’s department in Sacramento, the accident happened slightly after 6:30 a.m. when a driver in a red vehicle that was traveling in a northerly direction on Mather Field Road went through a red light where Folsom Boulevard meets Paseo Drive and hit another vehicle traveling west on Folsom Boulevard. Reportedly, the speeding northbound vehicle then hit the pedestrian, 55, who was in a crosswalk. Paseo Drive was closed in the area of the accident, and Folsom Boulevard was partially shut down. There is no word at the time of this report as to the condition of either driver involved in the accident or whether charges have been filed.

Pedestrian Accidents Are on the Rise

According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, in 2015, approximately 5,350 pedestrians were killed in the United States. This made up 15 percent of all fatalities in that year. In fact, the number of pedestrian fatalities increased by about 11 percent in 2016, bringing the total killed to 6,000.

Safety Devices Increase as Pedestrian Deaths Rise

There is an increase in safety features incorporated in today’s vehicles and those expected of autonomous ones. However, there is no sign that it is lowering the number of pedestrian deaths. One explanation may be that both drivers and pedestrians are using their cell phones as they drive or walk. Another issue is speed. The higher the speed at which a pedestrian is struck, the more likely the pedestrian will die. In 2014, New York City set the speed limit on city streets to 25 mph, hoping to reduce the number of deaths.

Drunk Drivers Often Involved in Pedestrian Accidents

According to statistics, 15 percent of all pedestrians killed are involved in an accident with a drunk driver. Alternately, 13 percent of pedestrians who die are inebriated themselves. Stressing the dangers of either driving or walking while intoxicated might be one way to reduce the number of pedestrian accidents.

California Pedestrian Deaths

Although the number of pedestrian deaths rose nationwide in 2016, California experienced a downturn. The number of pedestrian deaths in the first half of 2015 in California was 405. In the same period in 2016, that number was reduced to 359, which is an 11.4 percent decrease.

Rancho Cordova and Sacramento County Pedestrian Deaths

The California Office of Traffic Safety reports that the number of pedestrian accidents where a pedestrian was injured or killed was 15, placing the city at 81 out of 105 cities in the state. Sacramento County ranked 36 out of 58 counties in California with the number of pedestrians injured or killed at 440.

Injuries in Pedestrian Accidents

Aside from pedestrians killed, many are seriously injured due to their lack of protection. Some common injuries are:
