Pickup Truck Occupant Trapped in Rollover Accident
I’m Ed Smith, a Thousand Oaks car accident lawyer. A pickup truck crash, at Simi Valley on June 12, caused one injury that required a trip to a hospital. Officials reported just one vehicle was involved in the crash.
What Happened
According to officials from the Ventura County Fire Department, the accident happened where First Street crosses East Easy Street, just past East Los Angeles Avenue at about 10:30 in the morning. A pickup, with three persons inside, turned over and ended up upside down. One of the occupants of the pickup was trapped and had to be removed by fire personnel after removing the doors to the vehicle. One of the individuals involved was taken to a local hospital with injuries reported as minor. The other occupants received medical treatment at the accident scene.
Rollover Crashes
Rollover accidents have a higher rate of fatalities than other types of accidents and account for about 35 percent of all deaths in motor vehicle crashes. Vehicles, such as SUVs, that are taller and narrower are at higher risk of a rollover due to their higher center of gravity. Pickups have the second-highest rate of rollover followed by utility trucks according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Passenger vehicles have the lowest rate at 22.3 percent of rollover accidents. The risk of rollover injuries can be lowered by wearing seat belts, avoiding distractions, obeying traffic laws and avoiding drinking and driving.
Rollover Crash Injuries
The National Automotive Sampling System Database reported that there are five areas where most injuries occur in a rollover accident. These are in the neck and head region, abdomen, chest, and upper and lower extremities. The reason is that as the vehicle rolls, the body may contact torn pieces of metal, parts of the vehicle’s interior, broken glass or even be thrown from the vehicle. Common injuries include injury to the spinal cord, traumatic brain injury and broken bones.
Accidents Involving a Crushed Roof Rollover
Injuries can be worse if the occupant of the vehicle was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. If the roof is crushed during the rollover, the injuries can be even more devastating. Since being injured in a rollover accident may be compounded by the vehicle you were driving, it is a good idea to consult an experienced crushed roof injury lawyer when pursuing damages.
