Hit and Run Details
It was approximately 4:30 a.m. on Saturday morning when police responded to a report regarding an unconscious male lying on Buchanan Road, just near Meadows Avenue. According to Pittsburg police, Watkins had already passed away by the time emergency responders arrived.
A later investigation revealed new information regarding a potential lead on the culprit that struck Michael Watkins. Allegedly, there was a truck driving eastbound along Buchanan Road before crashing into the male pedestrian. It is believed that in the moments leading up to the collision, Watkins was walking in the opposite direction on the shoulder of the road. The truck identified appears to have been a Ford F-150 pickup with a sunroof. No further information is currently available. Anyone who may have witnessed this event or has any relevant information is encouraged to call the Pittsburg police department at (925) 252-4980.
Being a Witness to a Hit and Run Accident
You never know when or if you will be a key witness in an accident, but some general guidelines would be helpful to know in the event of witnessing an accident. Here is what you should know:
- Evaluate the scene of the accident. Call 9-1-1 if there are any injuries or vehicular damage. Even if the crash appears to have been minor, calling 9-1-1 is still a good idea because you will be able to report the incident to trained officials.
- Do not attempt to touch or move any injured people. You may want to help, but moving someone could potentially worsen their existing injuries. Leave that to the paramedics that will arrive.
- Make sure it is safe to approach the scene before going over. Your safety should always come first, followed by the safety of others.
- Give the police a complete witness statement. Some of the information they may ask you could include your name, address, and contact details, the time and location of the accident, a description of the cars involved, and a description of the general collision. The more information you can provide, the stronger the claim that can be made for the injured person.
