Identifying a Hit-and-Run Driver
In the course of our diligent investigative work, our firm has been able to locate a number of fleeing drivers. Bystanders who witnessed the accident are asked about the driver and the vehicle. We can put together the puzzle even with the simplest clues, such as the color and make of the vehicle, any distinguishing stickers on the car, the driver’s description, and parts of the license plate number. We perform accident reconstruction, check surveillance cameras in the area and execute other investigative techniques to identify the fleeing driver.
Accidents Caused by Drivers Who Flee
Accidents caused by drivers who leave the accident scene can have a variety of causes. Here are a few of the most common:
- There is an outstanding warrant against the driver.
- Alcohol or drugs have been consumed by the vehicle operator, and he or she does not want to be arrested.
- There is a fear that disciplinary action will be taken against the vehicle’s operator because they don’t have a valid driver’s license.
- There is an out-of-date registration on the vehicle.
- As a result of their panic, the driver flees the scene.
Accidents Involving a Fleeing Driver and Obtaining Compensation
If the fleeing driver is not apprehended, many clients fear they will not receive compensation. It is also possible that the fleeing driver does not have enough insurance to cover all damages. Our firm assists our clients by using their underinsured or uninsured driver policies to reimburse them for all damages when a driver either isn’t located or has no automobile insurance.
The Use of an Uninsured/Underinsured Driver Policy
There are many California drivers without proper insurance or with just the bare minimum coverage, so many of them carry an optional uninsured/underinsured policy. If you or your family suffer injuries or fatalities in an accident, this insurance will cover you and your family up to the policy limit. If the person who was injured or died does not have this insurance and another family member does, theirs can be used instead. The policy rates remain unaffected.
