Placerville Rollover Kills Two, Injures Two
I’m Ed Smith, a Placerville personal injury lawyer. A recent Placerville area crash tragically left two people with fatal injuries and caused two more moderate and significant trauma. According to California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports, the accident only involved a single vehicle. CHP says they do not know what caused the incident and that they are currently investigating possible crash factors. El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office authorities reported the identities of all of the vehicle occupants. The injured individuals were identified as Anita Heitzler, a 71-year-old woman from Shingle Springs, and Candice Essex, a 53-year-old woman from Redding. The two people who lost their lives were reported to be William Wegmann, a 55-year-old San Francisco man, and William Bone, a 62-year-old man also from San Francisco.
My sympathy is with Mr. Bone’s and Mr. Wegmann’s family members and friends as they mourn their lost loved ones.
Collision Details
Placerville area CHP officers reported that the accident took place at around 7:16 p.m. on South Shingle Road near the small community of Shingle Springs. Wegmann had been driving south in a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee to the north of the Coyote Pass Road intersection. CHP documented that Wegmann may have been driving at a high rate of speed.
At this time, Wegmann’s vehicle drifted to the right-hand side of the road, and its passenger-side wheels traveled off the highway. After drifting slightly off the highway, the Jeep apparently made a sharp left turn and crossed over all highway lanes, driving into a nearby garden.
After entering the garden, the car flipped over with its rear-end tumbling over the front-end. The vehicle eventually came to a stop after striking both a vinyl fence and small tree. Reports indicate that the car ended up resting on its roof.
Response
Emergency medics were quickly sent to respond to the accident. Upon arrival, responders found both Wegmann and Bone with injuries that they were unable to treat. Sadly, both men were declared deceased at the scene.
Essex was found with serious injuries and was transported to a nearby emergency center for care. Heitzler was found with moderate injuries and also transported to an emergency room.
Causal Factors
CHP has stated that they do not currently know why this crash happened or what initially caused the Jeep to drive off of the road. Factors that can contribute to an accident include malfunctioning vehicles, dangerous roadways, medical emergencies, driver fatigue, distracted driving or driving while intoxicated.
