Rancho Cordova Child Pedestrian Death
I’m Ed Smith, a Rancho Cordova Wrongful Death Lawyer. A young girl of 12 years was struck by a vehicle Tuesday, the 13th of June in the morning at 6:45 am in Rancho Cordova, California. She had no pulse when emergency personnel arrived and was pronounced dead from her injuries after being taken to the hospital. The driver of the vehicle did not flee the scene and was questioned by the authorities after the pedestrian death.
What Happened?
The 12-year-old was walking to a nearby high school to attend summer classes. She was accompanied by a boy her age when the accident occurred. The two arrived at the intersection of El Manto Drive and Coloma Road. They waited for the light to give the walk signal and started to cross. The boy stated that he had looked both ways before crossing and the car all of a sudden came out of nowhere. She must have been a step or two ahead of him as they stepped into the crosswalk. As she stepped into the crosswalk, the vehicle struck her.
The boy promptly called his grandparents immediately telling them to hurry and come. When the Grandparents of the boy arrived the injured girl was receiving attention from neighbors who lived nearby. When emergency responders arrived they attempted lifesaving first aid protocol before transporting her to the hospital. The boy’s Grandpa stated that “they were doing everything right” while trying to cross the busy street.
The neighbor, Eva Taylor ran to the scene and called 911 while her mother administered CPR to the victim. The descriptions of the driver of the vehicle refer to him as being hysterical on the phone after the collision. Taylor told a news outlet that she had nearly been hit on that very same corner.
Common Injuries from Accidents
With vehicle and pedestrian accidents, most incidences occur at crosswalks or intersections where the pedestrians are crossing the road and are struck on the side. About 75% of these accidents happen at 25 miles per hour or less. When an average size car strikes a person at those lower speeds there are usually three impacts. First, the car will hit the pelvis or legs at the bumper or hood. This will launch the victim onto the vehicle where the second impact of the head or upper torso will come in contact with the hood or windshield. If the car stops or slows down enough it stills forces the body forward and causes the victim to strike the road for the third impact. The force of impact can lead to pedestrian death.
Potential Disability
Pelvic, femur, and tibia fractures typically occur at the first impact as well as torn knee ligaments (MCL, ACL, LCL, and PCL). These are not the leading cause of death but are the most likely to cause future disability if the victim survives. During the second impact, the body part that comes in contact with the hard surfaces of the hood or windshield is most frequently the head. This impact causes skull fractures, brain swelling, hemorrhages, and concussions. These injuries are the leading cause of death in vehicle and pedestrian accidents.
