Rancho Cordova Fatal Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accident
A man was walking in Rancho Cordova during the evening hours of Thursday, February 24, 2017, when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle. The driver allegedly made no attempt to see if the pedestrian was okay, and sadly, he suffered fatal injuries.
What Happened?
A man was crossing Sunrise Boulevard north of Coloma Road near Gold River at about 8:00 p.m. A driver of an SUV or truck was approaching the man and could not avoid him. The impact from the vehicle propelled the man approximately 300 feet north of Coloma Road.
Driver Flees from Scene
Authorities responded to a call about a pedestrian accident at about 8:15 p.m. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a man in the northbound left lane near Coloma Road. According to officers, they believe that the driver may have attempted to stop before crashing into the pedestrian due to the skid marks discovered along the roadway. However, the vehicle’s driver was nowhere to be found after the incident.
Pedestrian Accident Investigation
Officer Tommy Rigin, a California Highway Patrol (CHP) spokesman, indicated that officers did not locate any witnesses at the scene. Officers recovered a mirror left on the roadway that appears to track back to an SUV or truck. The driver of this vehicle allegedly left the scene without making any call for assistance for the injured victim. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as 66-year-old Johnathan Morgan.
