One Man Dies, Another Injured by Fleeing Motorist
The pedestrian who was unresponsive, died at the accident scene. The second individual is expected to survive. The family of the deceased man has to be notified before their identity is released.
Double Casualty Accident Being Investigated
Officers with the sheriff’s office do not yet know whether there is any connection between the two men who were struck. They are accessing nearby traffic camera surveillance footage for more information. No information was released on the vehicle or person who committed the hit-and-run.
Factors Contributing to Pedestrian Accidents
Motor vehicle strikes often result in serious injuries or pedestrian deaths because people on foot are so vulnerable. Many times, the driver is at fault, such as:
- The driver is intoxicated or under the influence of drugs: Combined with a motor vehicle, intoxication is a dangerous combination.
- Pedestrians can easily be killed or seriously injured by red-light runners when they are crossing a street.
- The act of intentionally striking a pedestrian may be mistaken for an accident if the driver flees the scene.
- Texting, chatting and other activities can distract a driver.
- It is just as dangerous to drive when you are fatigued as it is to drive while intoxicated.
Identifying a Fleeing Motorist After a Pedestrian Accident
There is a lot of experience in our office when it comes to finding hit-and-run drivers. With us, it’s a passion because we don’t want a fleeing motorist to get away with their crime without being punished. The family may also feel a sense of closure by finding the driver. In addition to working with authorities, our investigators also head out to gather information about the driver.
Investigators look for paint smears and metal pieces at the accident site to determine the vehicle. The make and model can be identified this way. The investigators reconstruct the accident and check for any business and traffic surveillance cameras that might have captured the incident. A witness interview is conducted and the police report is reviewed for errors.
Using Your Underinsured/Uninsured Policy
Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is available to Californians when applying for car insurance. Due to a high prevalence of uninsured or underinsured drivers in the state, many opt for additional coverage. An add-on policy can be used if a household member has this policy but the injured person does not. Policy rates are not affected.
