Two Vehicles Collide on U.S. 50, and One Driver Flees the Scene

A hit-and-run occurred in Rancho Cordova involving two vehicles on June 9, and although one person was injured, the other driver fled the scene. The crash occurred around 3:52 p.m. along U.S. 50 just west of the Sunrise Boulevard off-ramp. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that it occurred between a Jeep Cherokee, which spun out and struck the center divider, and a Saturn.

Witness to the Accident Follows the Fleeing Driver

One witness to the accident called police, saying they followed the Saturn, which left the scene, down westbound Folsom from Sunrise. Another caller said a bumper from the vehicle fell off and was lying in the number three lane. Although emergency responders had assessed the patient in the Jeep and left, they were called back to transport that individual to a hospital to be assessed for their injuries.

The lanes were cleared around 4:27 p.m. It was not reported whether police caught up with the fleeing driver; however, that person is being sought. The investigation into the accident is being conducted by the CHP.

Investigating to Locate a Hit-and-Run Driver

By conducting an investigation to locate a hit-and-run driver, that individual can be held responsible for an accident injury, either through their insurance company or by suing them in civil court. My legal team and I have been successful in locating a driver who fled the scene of an accident many times, and our investigators are good at what they do. Some of the actions performed are:

  • The investigators conduct accident reconstruction, which outlines the positioning of the vehicles before the collision occurred, shows what happened, and the final positioning. This type of evidence frequently demonstrates who was at fault for the accident.
  • Evidence regarding the hit-and-run vehicle is photographed and identified as to the make and model of the car. Paint smears and auto body parts at the accident scene can be used to narrow down what type and year the vehicle was.
  • Witness statements are taken, which can include a description of the vehicle and driver. Some witnesses may have filmed the accident on their cell phones.
  • The investigators examine the police report to look for mistakes because errors could affect the client’s claim for compensation.
  • Area business, roadway, and traffic cameras are looked at to see if the collision was captured on tape. If it was, that film could be subpoenaed.

Our injury attorneys use the gathered evidence to help locate the hit-and-run driver. If it isn’t possible, there is another option the client can use to obtain compensation.

Paying for Accident Injuries When the At-Fault Driver Flees the Scene

Hit-and-run drivers cannot always be located. However, there is another way the injured party can collect compensation to pay for their injuries. They can use their uninsured/underinsured insurance policy to cover the damages.

California drivers can opt into this add-on policy when they first elect to take auto insurance. It covers not only traffic collisions in an automobile but bicyclists, pedestrians, and others. If the injured person does not have this insurance but another member of the household does, that can be used instead. The rates remain unaffected.
