Rancho Cordova Vehicle Pursuit

Collision with Purpose

Rancho Cordova Vehicle Pursuit

I’m Ed Smith, a Rancho Cordova Personal Injury Lawyer. A chase that started in Rancho Cordova ended in Sacramento with some smooth moves by Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.

What Happened?

A car pursuit suspect was arrested for grand theft auto on March 15, 2016, after a pursuit started in Rancho Cordova along Highway 50.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, along with Rancho Cordova Police, answered a call of a car theft about 5:40 p.m.

The suspect was located within 15 minutes by way of a handy family member tracking service on the victim’s cell phone. The victim of the car theft left his cell phone in the car. The car was left unattended for a moment just prior to being stolen.

The car chase was on for at least 10 miles starting from Highway 50 at Zinfandel Drive. It concluded at Broadway and 49th Street.  Deputy Jeff Wall performed a very smooth maneuver called a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) to capture the driver. Deputy Wall was well trained in the specifics of this maneuver. This, however, was his first real life experience with it. He was extremely happy that it worked just like it was designed to. After Deputy Wall rammed into the stolen SUV the driver stopped near the DMV building.

The car thief got out of the SUV and dropped to the ground. Officers were able to make the arrest.

The vehicle pursuit lasted about 30 minutes from start to finish. Thankfully, no one was hurt and the stolen car was returned to owner Don Spencer.  Spencer credits his phone service application that allows family members to track each other. He entered his own phone number and the service was tracking the location of his stolen vehicle (with his cell phone inside) the entire route.
