Afternoon Rush Hour Traffic on SR 51 Affected by Rear-End Collision
An injured person called the California Highway Patrol (CHP) around 4:49 p.m. on June 2 to report a rear-end collision. The crash occurred, according to the CHP, along southbound State Route 51 just north of the P Street off-ramp. The Sacramento Fire Department was notified of the collision and sent a response team to check for injuries.
One Injury Reported in Rear-End Crash
A Honda Civic with rear-end damage was discovered as well as a Chevy Cruz. The man in the Honda was reportedly injured in the accident. At least one of the vehicles required towing from the site of the rear-end collision. It will be investigated by officers with the CHP to discover how the crash occurred.
Rear-End Collisions are Common
One of the most common types of car accidents, rear-end collisions, can also be dangerous. The biggest problem is that the driver of the vehicle that is struck rarely can make an evasive maneuver. Rear-end accidents account for approximately 30 percent of all crashes that cause serious injuries. Rear-end collisions are also responsible for 7 percent of all traffic fatalities.
Injuries in a Rear-End Collision
Even a low-speed rear-end crash can cause injuries. Because it is unexpected and the driver and passengers in front have no advance warning to brace themselves, they often strain against the seat belts or strike the windshield, steering wheel, or dash. Some of the most common injuries seen in a rear-end crash include:
- Injury to the cervical spine: At the point of impact, the head and cervical spine accelerate forward and decelerate backward in a whip-like fashion. This type of movement causes strain and sprain to the muscles and tendons that surround the cervical vertebrae. This is commonly called whiplash, and symptoms, although often delayed for up to 72 hours, can persist for months and, in some cases, years.
- Injury to the ribs and chest: Without proper restraints, the body in a rear-end collision can be propelled forward into the steering wheel, causing damage to the ribs. On some occasions, a fractured/splintered rib can penetrate the lungs or heart.
- Cardiac contusions: Impact to the chest can result in a contusion/bruise of the heart. This can have dire consequences.
- Upper back injury: Injury to the thoracic spine (upper back) occurs in rear-end accidents. The degree of injury depends on the speed of impact with a higher speed resulting in more serious trauma.
- Lower-spine and pelvic injury: Due to the forward motion of the body while wearing a seat belt and pelvic restraints, serious injury to the area can occur. This can include vertebral herniation and, in severe cases, pelvic fracture.
Investigating a Rear-End Collision
At our law firm, we dispatch investigators to the scene of the accident, where they use forensic reconstruction techniques to determine liability. They also search for video surveillance and local business cameras that might have captured the accident on tape. Our investigators interview witnesses and check the police report for discrepancies. Once all the data is accumulated, they hand it over to our injury attorneys, who use it to build a strong case for our client.
