Hit and Run Bicycle Accident Injures Cyclist in Redding

Anthony Tyrone Revis, a 51-year-old man from Redding, was sent to a hospital after being hit by a motorist on Tuesday, June 20.

What Happened?

Anthony was riding his bicycle at 3:10 a.m. on Lake Boulevard when he was struck by an unknown motorist. The driver was driving a white Nissan Maxima and fled the scene after the bicycle accident. Witnesses noted the Nissan headed east on Lake Boulevard while escaping. Authorities rushed Revis to a hospital with suspected head trauma. He was diagnosed by medical professionals with head injuries and an ankle injury.

Upon further investigation, Redding Police suspect Anthony Revis’ actions on his bicycle to be the cause of the accident. The driver involved has still not been apprehended, and police are on the lookout for a white Nissan Maxima with possible body damage to the front passenger side. Please notify police of any information regarding this accident or the vehicle’s and driver’s whereabouts. There does not appear to have been any license plate numbers recorded.

Why Did the Driver Flee?

Usually, in hit-and-run cases, the fleeing driver is at fault in the accident. If the other person is at fault, most people will stay until the police arrive or resolve the issue with insurance to receive restitution for their damages. If a driver runs after an accident, there may be many reasons. If a driver does not have a driving license or insurance on their vehicle, they may flee the accident to escape a ticket from traffic police. Many people run if they know that they are driving under the influence. No matter who causes an accident, driving while drunk or under the influence of drugs is a severe offense, and in many cases, one will blame the drunk driver. Illegal activity in the car or by vehicle occupants is another reason to not stick around after a crash. The vehicle could have contained illegal drugs, weapons, and or contraband. The driver may have been tied to a recent crime and wanted to avoid being identified by the police. Whatever the reason, leaving the scene of a car, motorcycle, or bicycle accident on public roads is considered a felony and will be prosecuted as such.

Bicycling at Night

Noting the early hours of the incident, it could have been tough for the driver to see Anthony while riding his bike along the road. Proper safety gear can significantly reduce the risk of being hit while riding in the darkness of night. Most bicycles come with front, back, and pedal reflectors, but their size and visibility are often insufficient. High-visibility vests with reflective tape are also recommended. Reflectors are a great, cheap option to improve visibility, but they rely on another light source to be effective. It is harder to see you if you are not in the beam of someone’s headlights. Blinking red and white lights for the front and back of the bicycle is one of the best ways to keep safe while riding at night. Wearing safety gear and obeying traffic laws will help avoid accidents and injuries.
