Redding Pedestrian Fatally Injured in Big-Rig Accident
On Monday, December 7, 2020, a Redding pedestrian suffered fatal trauma as the result of a local trucking accident. California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that the incident took place in the early morning and only involved the pedestrian and a large commercial truck. The decedent’s identity has not yet been released by the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office. Furthermore, the accident is under official investigation at this time.
Crash Information
CHP information officers reported that the collision happened at 5:10 a.m. on Highway Interstate 5 just south of the interchange located at Cypress Avenue. Police have stated that a 43-year-old man from Sacramento was driving a Kenworth big-rig while heading north on the highway at a speed of around 5 miles per hour.
At this time, the pedestrian was walking along the side of the freeway and allegedly entered into the road. The right front fender of the semi truck struck the pedestrian, throwing him onto the right-hand highway shoulder.
Response
CHP was contacted regarding the crash directly after it occurred and rushed responders to the site. When they reached the scene, medical personnel discovered that the pedestrian was severely injured. Sadly, the individual lost his life on-site. The driver of the big-rig was not reported to have sustained physical injuries during the incident.
Investigation
CHP closed multiple traffic lanes while they conducted accident response and preliminary accident scene investigations. Traffic lanes remained at least partially closed until 7:15 a.m. As they continue to look into the crash, police haven’t indicated whether or not there are any suspected causes at this point in their investigation.
Fatal pedestrian accidents can be very difficult for CHP to investigate, especially when officers can’t ask the pedestrian about what happened. In these instances, it’s possible that investigators will never fully understand what caused the crash, often leaving families unable to hold at-fault parties responsible for their losses. To prevent this oversight, it’s important that your attorney conducts a private accident investigation.
Big-Rig Accidents
Accidents that involve big-rigs are much more likely to cause severe and/or fatal injuries, and trucking companies are very aware of this fact. Because they normally operate an entire fleet of trucks, these companies usually think of accidents as a normal risk of conducting business. This means that trucking companies are almost always ready to begin building a legal defense as soon as accidents occur.
This quick and aggressive defense can make it hard for families to obtain fair wrongful death damages. However, if your lawyer is able to begin working on the case right away, they will be more able to prevent the company from disclaiming responsibility.
