Reduce Femur Fracture Risk By Following a Few Strategies

A femur fracture is one of the most severe broken bones that someone can suffer. Therefore, it is vital that everyone takes steps to reduce femur fracture risk. As one of the thickest bones in the body, it requires a tremendous amount of force to fracture the femur. Some of the most common mechanisms of a broken femur include auto accidents, motorcycle collisions, and falls from a great height. Because of the force required to break the femur, these bone fractures are almost always severe.

Because of the severity of this injury, it is incumbent on everyone to take steps to reduce femur fracture risk. There are a few simple steps and strategies that people can employ to strengthen their bones and reduce their chances of suffering this serious fracture.

Thinking About Diet and Nutrition

One of the first steps that people can take to reduce their risk of suffering a femur fracture is to think about their diet. Bones require nutrition to withstand accidents, wear and tear, and other forms of stress. Calcium is the building block of strong bones. Calcium is found in dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt. Calcium is also found in trace amounts in certain vegetables. Increasing calcium intake can strengthen someone’s bones, making them more resistant to fractures.

In order for calcium to be absorbed by the bones, it needs the assistance of vitamin D. There are many forms of vitamin D, and one of the most common forms comes from the sun. When the sun strikes the skin, it triggers an enzymatic reaction that activates vitamin D, converting it into a form that can be used by the human body. Vitamin D and calcium can work together to strengthen the femur, preventing injuries from happening. Proper nutrition can also prevent the development of osteoporosis, one of the biggest risk factors involved in a femur fracture.

Regular Exercise can Reduce Femur Fracture Risk

In addition to diet, exercise can also strengthen the femur. Weight-bearing exercises that cause mechanical loading of the femur will strengthen its structure. If people use their femur regularly during exercise, the body will learn this bone structure is important. As a result, the body will send resources to make this body part stronger.

Regular exercise can also strengthen the tissues around the femur. Weight-bearing exercise will strengthen the muscles, ligaments, and tendons that support the structure of the femur. Exercise can also improve the flexibility and range of motion of the lower leg itself. All of this is important because it increases the ability of the femur to resist injury.

Preventing Accidents from Happening

Finally, one of the most important ways to reduce someone’s risk of sustaining a femur fracture is to prevent accidents from happening. Auto accidents and motorcycle collisions are high-energy events that can lead to a broken femur. Particularly if someone is ejected from their vehicle, the chances of sustaining a femur fracture are high. Proper safety precautions, including seatbelts, avoiding poor weather, and maintaining vehicular control, can prevent this from happening.

It is also important for people to take steps to prevent falls. Make sure that all walkways are well-lit. Place handrails near ramps and staircases. Mark all hazards such as wet and slick surfaces. Preventing falls from happening can also reduce someone’s risk of suffering a femur fracture. Stopping a broken femur from happening is always preferable to treating one that has already occurred.
