Peer-to-Peer Motorcycle Rentals

Riders Share is a peer-to-peer motorcycle-sharing community. It allows vetted riders to find a motorcycle on the website and rent it directly from the bike’s owner. The company’s website offers a large stock of makes and models that owners across the country are offering for rent. The Sacramento area is one of the company’s most popular markets. The option will likely replace the old traditional motorcycle rental businesses which have cumbersome requirements, are expensive, and have limited bike options.

Riders Share has recently launched a monthly subscription service that allows renters to book discounted rides. The service is designed to encourage growth and cycle ridership.

History of Riders Share

The company was launched in 2018 by an avid motorcyclist. To date, Riders Share has accumulated more than 100,000 registered users, with more than 15,000 motorcycle owners sharing their bikes on the platform.

Average Price of a Riders Share Rental

Motorcycle owners set the price for renting their bike, but it appears to average around $100 per day, which includes insurance. This is significantly cheaper than offerings from traditional motorcycle rental companies.

Why the Program Works

Motorcycles are underutilized in the United States. Motorcycles are four times less likely to be used than a car, on average. This makes the cost-per-trip of each motorcycle ride much higher. Many motorcycle owners average less than 40 days of riding annually. This results in an ownership cost-per-ride of at least $190.00! Clearly, the average $100-per-day rental cost of a bike on Riders Share beats that number.

New Subscription Model

The CEO of Riders Share says the company seeks to make motorcycling more affordable. With the new subscription service that they are offering, the cost will be further reduced. The service is called Rider Pass and is available only to riders who are older than 25 years of age. It is also limited to riders with a FICO credit rating above 700. The cost of the subscription service is $24 per month, or if a year is pre-paid in advance, the cost is $264, representing a two-dollar per month reduction if paid all at once.

Rider Vetting

The platform uses a computer program to vet riders. Some of the requirements are:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Email and phone number must be validated
  • Credit card payment required
  • Must have a valid (not temporary) motorcycle license
  • The company may also do a background check.

Most of the riders that meet the above criteria are able to rent, but the company does reserve the right to refuse bookings if they are deemed overly risky by the computer system.

Insurance

The company’s website thoroughly explains the insurance process, but in short, each rental fee includes an insurance policy. The Riders Share Insurance provides the minimum required liability coverage in the state the bike will be rented. For owners, it provides up to $30,000 in property damage coverage.
