I’m Ed Smith, a Ripon car accident lawyer. A multi-vehicle collision occurred in Calaveras County near Copperopolis on the afternoon of Saturday, October 28, 2017. Officials reported that the crash was caused by an alleged drunk driver. Unfortunately, the accident caused several parties to suffer traumatic injuries.
We hope and pray for a speedy and full recovery for the parties that were affected by this senseless tragedy.
What Happened?
A Ripon man was driving his 2002 Ford pickup truck while hauling a boat trailer along Highway 4 at approximately 2:25 pm. The Ripon man allegedly drifted over the double solid yellow line and into the direct path of two oncoming Harley Davidson motorcycles. Both motorcyclists were unable to avoid the Ford, resulting in a serious motorcycle accident. The impact of the collision caused four parties on the motorcycles to be thrown from their bikes.
A 2013 Mini Cooper was approaching the accident scene and the driver applied their brakes to avoid a head-on collision. A 2014 Honda was unable to stop in time for the slowed Mini Cooper ahead and rear-ended the vehicle.
Was Anybody Injured?
The four occupants on the two Harley Davidson motorcycles all suffered major injuries and were transported to the Memorial Medical Center in Modesto for treatment. They were later identified as 54-year-old Debra Babausta Caison, 56-year-old Christopher Caison, 57-year-old Catherine Law and 61-year-old Victor Anthony Law, all residents of Castro Valley. The driver of the Honda, identified as 34-year-old Karyn Elizabeth McQueen of Mountain House, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.
Ripon Man Arrested for DUI
The driver of the Ford pickup truck, identified as 47-year-old David Michael Barnett, was taken to Mark Twain Medical Center in San Andreas for treatment of moderate injuries. According to a California Highway Patrol (CHP) report, Barnett was released from hospitalization and detained by officials on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Drunk Driving Accidents
When a person is operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, their abilities to make good driving decisions are significantly impacted. Alcohol is a substance that impairs the vital functioning of the brain. This can result in reduced visual function, concentration and muscle coordination. A 2016 report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) concluded that 29 people succumb to their injuries in alcohol-related accidents every day. This number works out to one person having passed away in such accidents every 50 minutes in 2016. Drunk driving accidents oftentimes result in traumatic or even deadly consequences.
