Road Rage Accident Results in Arrest
A suspected case of road rage almost turned deadly in a May 31 accident along Bannon Street in North Sacramento. It happened when one man, driving a pickup, slammed into another truck intentionally at about 1:00 in the morning. When officers with the Sacramento Police Department arrived at the scene following the report of a traffic collision, they discovered that the crash had apparently been on purpose. It was reported that the two men involved in the accident had been in an altercation earlier.
Emergency Responders Called to the Scene
Emergency responders arrived at the scene of the road rage incident. They determined that the man in the vehicle that had been crashed into had suffered moderate injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation and treatment. The driver who caused the accident was taken into custody at the scene. He was booked on a charge of attempted homicide. The names of those involved in the accident have not yet been released.
Road Rage
According to a study by GasBuddy, Sacramento ranks in third place in the state for the number of road rage incidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, road rage is defined as someone who endangers another. That changes it from a traffic infraction to a criminal act.
Actions by a Driver With Road Rage
Although there are many aggressive drivers around, road rage takes it a critical step further. An altercation with the driver or passenger in another vehicle can escalate from name calling, obscene gestures, and rudeness to becoming dangerous. This can involve tailgating, cutting another driver off in traffic and weaving in and out. Any of these actions can cause an accident. At its extreme, the other individual may threaten another driver with a weapon, try to run a car off the road or intentionally crash into them. When someone is injured in a road rage or aggressive driver incident, they may claim damages to pay for lost wages, medical costs, and other expenses. In some cases, they may be able to claim punitive damages.
Obtaining Financial Compensation
An individual who has been injured by an aggressive driver or one who displays road rage can obtain financial compensation under the law. A personal injury lawyer who is experienced in handling these types of cases can help you. Lawyers who specialize in personal injuries offer a free consultation to listen to your case and answer your questions. Unlike other lawyers, they work on a contingency basis. This means that you do not pay them until your case has been won. In some instances, a case can be settled out of court. In others, the lawyer may build a strong case for the recovery of damages in civil court.
