Rocklin Truck Accident Causes Slippery Conditions
I’m Ed Smith, a Rocklin truck accident lawyer. The January 25th crash of a truck carrying cooking oil caused a hazard for motorists traveling in the area of Interstate 80 westbound at Sierra College and Commons Drive.
What Happened
According to a representative of the Rocklin Fire Department, the tanker overturned on the on-ramp to the interstate. When the truck rolled over, it spilled its load of cooking oil on the road, causing a hazard to other motorists. Drivers were advised to stay away from the area, and the Commons Drive entrance at the shopping center was closed because of the spill. The shopping center entrance remained open on Granite Drive. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Causes of Large Truck Rollovers
Although rollovers account for a small percentage of truck accidents compared to other causes, when they happen, severe injuries can occur. In some cases, a truck will suddenly block the highway or land on top of another vehicle. Following are some reasons a big truck experiences a rollover.
- Excess speed is the main reason for a large truck rollover, and most occur along highways. Rollovers occur when the speed of the tractor pulling the load goes at a slower rate of speed than the trailer being pulled. Contributing factors can include weather conditions, condition of the brakes and amount of weight. To help avoid this problem, the driver must be knowledgeable about the truck itself and its handling capabilities along with the condition. Speeding in a large truck is never a good idea.
- Distracted driving is also a major causative factor in truck rollovers. Some factors include texting while driving, accessing the GPS system, drowsy driving and other distractions. Turning cell phones off and pulling off the road when either overly tired or needing to check directions may help avoid accidents.
- Taking a curve too quickly accounted for a high number of the deaths involved in truck rollovers, according to the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine. Speeding to reach a location faster, bad judgment and problems with the load being hauled were factors. Loading problems included carrying too much weight, the weight being poorly distributed and top-heavy loads, which overbalanced the truck.
- Oversteering and other problems controlling the vehicle contributed to some rollover accidents. Changing lanes more slowly and staying in a through lane as much as possible can help.
- Not scanning the roads frequently enough can also cause rollovers. Looking ahead for slowed or stalled traffic and road hazards, checking rear view mirrors and watching for lane changes may help avoid a rollover.
